सगरः को मुनिश्रेष्ठ तन्म्रमाख्यातुमर्हसि
O best of sages, Sagara—please tell me about him.
गतं विष्णुपदं विप्र सर्वलोकोत्तमोत्तमम्
O Brahmin, he attained the supreme and most excellent abode of Vishnu.
बुभुजे पृथिवीं सर्वां धर्मतो धर्मतत्परः
He enjoyed the entire earth righteously, being devoted to righteousness.
स्थापिताः स्वस्वधर्मेषु तेन बाहुर्विशांपतिः
He, the lord of men, established everyone in their own duties.
अतर्प्पयद्भूमिदेवान् गोभूस्वर्णाशुकादिभिः
He satisfied the earth-gods with cows, land, gold, garments, and the like.
मेने कृतार्थमात्मानमन्यातपनिवारणम्
He considered himself fulfilled, having removed the suffering of others.
भूषिता भूषणौर्दिव्यैस्तद्राष्ट्रे सुखिनो मुने
Adorned with celestial ornaments, the people of that realm were happy, O sage.
अकृष्टपच्या पृथिवी फलपुष्पसमन्विता
The earth yielded fruits and flowers without being tilled.
आधर्मनिरतापाये प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षिताः
When unrighteousness was removed, the people were protected by righteousness.
अहॄङ्कारो महाञ्जज्ञे सासूयो लोपहेतुकः
A great pride arose, accompanied by jealousy and caused by loss.
कर्त्ता महाक्रतूनां च मत्तः पूज्यो ऽस्ति को ऽपरः
Who else besides me is worthy of honor, the performer of great sacrifices?
वेदवेदाङ्गतत्त्वज्ञो नीतिशास्त्र विशारदः
He is learned in the essence of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, and skilled in the science of ethics.
अहॄङ्कारपरस्यैवं जातासूया परेष्वपि
Thus, jealousy arises in others towards one who is excessively proud.
एषु स्थितेषु तु नरो विनाषं यत्यसंशयम्
When these are present in a person, he certainly heads towards destruction.
एकैकमप्यनर्थाय किमु यत्र चतुष्टयम्
Even one of these brings harm; what then when all four are found together?
स्वदेहनाशिनी विग्र सर्वसंपद्विनाशिनी
Quarrel destroys one's own body and brings ruin to all prosperity.
तुषाग्निं वायुसंयोगमिव जानीहि सुव्रत
Know it, O virtuous one, as fire in chaff joined with wind.
परुषोक्तिरतानां च सुखं नेह परत्र च
Harsh speech brings no happiness here or hereafter for those who indulge in it.
प्रियावा तनया वापि बान्धवा अप्यरातयः
Even beloved ones, children, or relatives can become enemies.
स स्वसंपद्विनाशाय कुठारो नात्र संशयः
He is the axe for the destruction of his own wealth; there is no doubt about this.
सर्वेषां श्रेयसं दृष्ट्वा स कुर्यान्मत्सूरं कुधीः
Seeing the welfare of all, the wicked-minded person becomes envious.
हानिमिच्छन्नरः कुर्यादसूयां सततं द्विज
Desiring harm, a man continually acts with envy, O twice-born.
हैहयास्ताललजङ्घाश्च बलिनो ऽरातयो ऽभवन्
The Haihayas, Tālalajaṅghas, and others became powerful enemies.
स एव विमुखो यस्य सौभाग्यं तस्य हीयते
He who turns away from someone, his fortune diminishes.
यावदीक्षेत लक्ष्मीशः कृपापाङ्गेन नारद
O Nārada, as long as the Lord of Lakṣmī glances with compassion,
श्लाध्या भवन्ति विप्रेन्द्र प्रेक्षिता माधवेन ये
those who are regarded by Mādhava become praiseworthy, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas.
जायते नात्र संदेहो जन्तुद्वेषो विशेषतः
There is no doubt in this, especially regarding enmity among creatures.
तस्य सर्वाणि नश्यन्ति श्रेयांसि मुनिसतम्
All auspicious things of that person, O best of sages, are destroyed.
धनं धान्यं मही संपनद्विश्यति ततो ध्रुवम्
Wealth, grain, and land certainly depart from him thereafter.
आपदः संभवन्त्येवेत्यहॄङ्कारं त्यजेत्ततः
Misfortunes surely arise; therefore, one should abandon arrogance.
