अकुतश्चित्कुतश्चिद्वा चित्ततः सात्त्विको गुणः
The quality of sattva arises in the mind, either from nowhere or from somewhere.
लिङ्गानि रजसस्तानि दृश्यन्ते हेत्वहेतुतः
The signs of rajas are seen, whether there is a cause or not.
कथञ्चिदपि वर्तन्ते विविधास्तामसा गुणाः
The various qualities of tamas persist in some way or another.
न लिप्यते कर्मपलैरनिष्टैः पत्रं विषस्येव जलेन सिक्तम्
He is not tainted by undesirable results of actions, just as a lotus leaf is not wetted by water.
यदा ह्यसौ दुःखसौख्ये जहाति मुक्तस्तदाग्र्यां गतिमेत्यलिङ्गः
When he, freed, abandons pleasure and pain, then, without marks, he attains the highest state.
क्षीणे च पुण्ये विगते च पापे तनोर्निमित्ते च फले विनष्टे
When merit is exhausted, sin is gone, and the results of bodily causes are destroyed—
यथोर्णनाभिः परिवर्तमानस्तन्तुक्षये तिष्टति यात्यमानः
Just as a spider, when its threads are spent, remains or departs, turning about—
यथा रुरुः शृङ्गमथो पुराणं हित्वा त्वचं वाप्युरगो यथा च
As a deer leaves behind its old antler, or as a serpent sheds its skin—
मत्स्यं यथा वाप्युदके पतन्तमुत्सृज्य पक्षी निपतत्सशक्तः
As a fish, falling into a pond, is abandoned, or as a bird, with strength, descends—
तथा ह्यसौ दुःखसौख्ये विहाय मुक्तः परार्द्ध्या गतिमेत्यलिङ्गः
So too, when he, freed, abandons pleasure and pain, he attains the supreme state, without marks.
निखिलमभिसमीक्ष्य निश्चितार्थः परमसुखी विजहार वीतशोकः
Having considered everything, understanding the truth, supremely content, he lived free from sorrow.
न खलु मम हि दह्यते ऽत्र किञ्चित्स्वयमिदमाह किल स्म भूमिपालः
Indeed, nothing here burns me at all—so, it is said, the king himself declared.
उपद्रवाननुभघवते ह्यदुः खितः प्रमुच्यते कपिलमिवैत्य मैथिलः
Having experienced troubles, yet untroubled, he is released, like the king of Mithila upon meeting Kapila.
पुनः पप्रच्छ तं प्रीत्या सनन्दनमुदारधीः
Again, with affection, the noble-minded one questioned Sanandana.
प्रब्रूहि तन्मुने मह्यं प्रपन्नाय दयानिधे
Tell me that, O sage, to me who have taken refuge, O ocean of compassion.
गर्बे जन्मजराद्येषुस्थानेषु प्रभविष्यतः
What is the remedy for birth, old age, and other conditions, which prevail in the womb and elsewhere?
भेषजं भगवत्प्राप्तिरैका चात्यन्तिकी मता
The sole and ultimate remedy is considered to be the attainment of the Blessed Lord.
तत्प्राप्तिहेतुज्ञानं च कर्म चोक्तं महामुने
O great sage, the knowledge of the means to attain Him, and action, have been spoken of.
शब्दब्रह्मागममयं परं ब्रह्मविवेकजम्
The supreme knowledge arising from discernment of Brahman is composed of the tradition of the sound-Brahman.
तदेतच्छ्रूयतामत्र सुबोधं गदतो मम
Now, listen to this from me, as I explain it clearly here.
शब्दब्रह्मणि निष्णातः परं ब्रह्माधिगच्छति
One who is deeply versed in the sound-Brahman attains the supreme Brahman.
परमा त्वक्षरप्राप्तिरृग्वेदादिमया परा
The highest, indeed, is the attainment of the imperishable, which is supreme and consists of the Ṛgveda and the rest.
अनिर्देश्यमरूपं च पाणिपादादिसंयुतम्
It is indescribable, formless, yet endowed with hands, feet, and so on.
व्याप्यं व्याप्तं यतः सर्वं तं वै पश्यन्ति सूरयः
That which pervades and is pervaded by all—sages indeed see that.
श्रुतिवाक्योदितं सूक्ष्मं तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्
That subtle, supreme abode of Viṣṇu, spoken of in the words of the Vedas.
वाचको भगवच्छब्दस्तस्योद्दिष्टो ऽक्षयात्मनः
The word 'Bhagavat' is the designation for Him whose essence is imperishable.
ज्ञायते येन तज्ज्ञानं परमन्यत्रयीमयम्
That by which knowledge is known—that supreme knowledge is distinct from the threefold Veda.
पूजायां भगवच्छब्दः क्रियते ह्यौपचारिकः
In worship, the word 'Bhagavat' is used in a figurative sense.
भगवन्भगवच्छब्दः सर्वकारणकारणे तेनागमपिता स्रष्टा गकारो ऽयं तथा मुने
O sage, the word 'Bhagavat' refers to the cause of all causes; thus, in the scriptures, 'ga' is called the father and creator.
ज्ञानवैराग्ययोश्चैव षण्णां भग इतीरणा
And 'bhaga' is said to be the sixfold excellence of knowledge and detachment.
