If this is so, what is the use of knowledge, learning, austerity, or strength?
Indeed, here one may suffer from others who are ordinary people.
Just as if the body were struck with clubs, it would return again.
The months and years, the star Tiṣya, cold and heat, and pleasure and pain—
Destroyed by death and overwhelmed by old age,
the senses, the mind, the vital wind, the blood, flesh, and bone—
the arranger of worldly activity, the attainment of the fruits of charity and righteousness—
thus, many causes are rightly considered in the mind.
For those who reflect upon them and speak of them rightly,
even so, all beings are afflicted by these misfortunes,
they are dragged away by calamities, just as elephants are by elephant-drivers.
Having encountered greater suffering, abandoning pleasure, they go under the power of death.
Whoever departs, leaving everything behind, goes in a moment and does not return.
Seeing this, how can there be delight? For even in this perishing, there is no peace.
The king, beholding this, was astonished and again began to question thus:
If this is so, what will ignorance or knowledge accomplish?
Whether one is heedless or vigilant, what difference will it make?
For whom should action be performed? What determination is proper here in truth?
Then, soothing with words, the sage Pañcashikha spoke:
This too is a combination of body, senses, and mind.
The elements are fivefold: water, space, wind, fire, and earth.
Space, wind, heat, moisture, and that which is of earth—
Knowledge, heat, and wind—these three are the constituents of the body.
Prāṇa and apāna, transformation, and the bodily elements arise here.
These five—called the senses—are qualities led by the mind.
They are called pleasure and pain, and also that which is neither pain nor pleasure.
These five excellent qualities, indeed, remain until death for the attainment of knowledge.
That is called the supreme purity, the imperishable great intellect.
Through improper perception, endless suffering does not cease.
Upon what foundation does the stream of suffering persist?
