And whatever is joined with pain, causing displeasure to oneself,
And whatever is joined with delusion, indistinct and troubled,
Exultation, joy, bliss, happiness, or tranquility of mind—
Discontent, distress, sorrow, greed, and also forbearance—
Disrespect, delusion, heedlessness, sleep, and drowsiness—
These many faults arise, rooted in desires and doubts.
The distinction between sattva and the knower of the field, both subtle—
Is like a mosquito and a fig, always joined together.
By nature, they are separate, yet always found together.
The qualities do not know the self; but the self knows all the qualities.
The senses act for the sake of illumination, together with pure intellect.
Indeed, sattva produces the qualities, while the knower of the field observes.
There is no true support for either sattva or the knower of the field.
When one restrains their rays with the mind in the right way—
The sage, ever delighting in the self, having abandoned natural action—
Just as a bird living in water is not wetted by the water,
So too, a person should dwell in their own nature, with their own understanding.
Engaged by the method of contemplation, one constantly produces the qualities.
When destroyed, they do not return; cessation is not found.
Thus, some conclude this is cessation, while others think otherwise.
Thus, this knot of the heart, firm and made of thoughts and intellect—
Just as impure men approach a full, pure river for cleansing,
Just as one who knows how to cross a great river does not suffer, so too is it otherwise.
In the same way, those who know the Self, the highest knowledge of liberation,
And, having observed with steady intellect, they attain tranquility from that.
Engaged in inquiry with a focused mind, seeing the truth, free from longing,
Here and there, among those who are scattered and difficult to reach, whose selves are unrefined,
Understanding that, the wise consider it as the only thing to be done.
For no one has a higher path, since when virtue exists, there is no inequality.
For him, there is neither unpleasant nor pleasant; how could there be pleasure or pain arising from action here?
