निष्कामा वा सकामा वा न कलिर्बाधते च तान्
Whether they are free from desire or filled with desire, Kali does not trouble them.
त एव शिवतुल्याश्च नात्र कार्या विचारणा
They are indeed equal to Shiva; there is no need for further deliberation here.
घोरे कलियुगे प्राप्ते विष्णुं ध्यायन्न सीदति
When the dreadful age of Kali arrives, one who meditates on Vishnu does not fall.
घोरे कलियुगे प्राप्ते सर्वधर्मविवर्जिते
When the dreadful age of Kali arrives, devoid of all righteousness,
हरिस्मरणमेवात्र संपूर्णत्वविधायकम्
Here, only the remembrance of Hari brings about completeness.
इतीरयन्ति ये नित्यं नहि तान्बाधते कलिः
Those who recite this always are not afflicted by Kali.
इति जल्पन्ति ये वापि कलिस्तान्नापि बाधते
Even those who merely utter these words are not troubled by Kali.
इत्थं वदन्ति ये विप्र ते कृतार्था न संशयः
Those brahmins who speak thus are fulfilled, without a doubt.
इति वाप्युञ्चरन्तीह न च तेषां कलेर्भयम्
Even those who act in this way here have no fear of Kali.
घोरे कलियुगे विप्र हरिभक्तस्तु दुर्लभा
O brahmin, in the dreadful age of Kali, a devotee of Hari is truly rare.
अधर्मनिरता नैव नरकार्हा हरिस्मृतेः
Those engaged in unrighteousness are not worthy of hell if they remember Hari.
मनः शुद्धिविहीनानां हरिनाम्नैव निष्कृतिः
For those whose minds lack purity, the only atonement is the name of Hari.
यथाप्रेरितमेतेन तथैव कुरुतें द्विज
O twice-born, as one is inspired by this, so should one act.
समर्पयेन्महाविष्णौ नारायणपरायणः
One devoted to Narayana should offer everything to the great Vishnu.
संपूर्णतां प्रयान्त्येव हरिस्मरणमात्रतः
Indeed, they attain completeness merely by remembering Hari.
अतो ऽतिदुर्लभा लोके हरिभक्तिर्दुरात्मनाम्
Therefore, devotion to Hari is extremely rare in this world among the wicked.
ते सुभाग्या महात्मानः सत्संगर हिता अपि
They are fortunate, great souls, even beneficial to the company of the virtuous.
सत्यं समस्तकर्माणि यान्ति संपूर्णतां द्विज
Truly, O twice-born, all actions attain completeness.
त्रिदर्शेरपि ते पूज्याः किमन्यैर्बहुभाषितैः
Even those seen by the three worlds are worthy of your reverence; what need is there for many words from others?
हरिनामपरान्मर्त्यान्न कलिर्बाधर्तक्वचित्
The Kali age never afflicts mortals who are devoted to the names of Hari.
कलौ नास्त्येव नास्त्येव गतिरन्यथा
In Kali, truly, truly, there is no other way.
परां निर्वृत्तिमापन्नः पुनरेतदुवाच ह
Having attained supreme bliss, he again spoke these words.
प्रकाशितं जगज्ज्योतिः परं ब्रह्म सनातनम्
The supreme, eternal Brahman, the light of the world, has been revealed.
यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं सर्वपापविनाशनम्
He who remembers the lotus-eyed one destroys all sins.
त्वयोक्तं तत्प्रतीये ऽहं कथं दृष्टान्तमन्तरा
What you have spoken, I accept; but how can I understand without an example?
तदाख्याहि यथा चित्तं सीदत्स्थितिमवाप्नुयात्
Tell me, then, how a mind that is sinking may attain stability.
सनकः प्रत्युवाचेदं स्मरन्नारायणं परम्
Sanaka replied, remembering the supreme Nārāyaṇa.
वेदान्तशास्त्रे कुशलस्तवायं निवर्तयेद्वा परमार्यवन्द्यः
He is skilled in the Vedānta scriptures, and may turn you back; he is most worthy of reverence among the noble.
