त एव भुवनं सर्वं पुंनति स्वाङ्घ्रिपांशुना
They alone purify the entire world with the dust of their own feet.
तत्रैव सर्वदेवाश्च तिष्टन्ति श्रीहरिस्तथा
There, all the gods remain, as does the glorious Hari.
तत्र सर्वाणि श्रेयांसि वर्द्धत्यहरहर्द्विज
There, all auspicious things increase day by day, O twice-born one.
न बाधन्ते ग्रहास्तत्र भूतवेताल कादयः
There, planets, spirits, and the like do not cause affliction.
यतः संनिहितस्तत्र भगवान्मधुसूदनः
Because there, the Blessed Madhusudana is present.
श्मशानसदृशं विद्यात्तद गृहं शुभवार्जितम् पुराणन्यायमीमांसा धर्मशास्त्राणि च द्विज
Know that house, though acquired by auspicious means, to be like a cremation ground, O twice-born, if it lacks the ancient law, inquiry, and treatises on dharma.
सांगा वेदास्तथा सर्वे विष्णोरूपं प्रकीर्तितम्
All the Vedas with their branches are proclaimed as the form of Vishnu.
ते ऽपि यान्ति परं स्थानं सर्वकर्मनिबर्हणम्
They too attain the supreme state, where all actions cease.
यां शृण्वतां कीर्तयतां सद्यः पापक्षयो भवेत्
By hearing or reciting this, the destruction of sin occurs immediately.
संवादः सुमहानासीत्तं वक्ष्यामि निशामय
A very great dialogue took place; I shall tell it—listen.
अप्सरोगणसंकीर्णो बृहस्पतिमभाषत
Surrounded by a host of Apsarases, he spoke to Brihaspati.
अतीतब्रह्मणः कल्पे सृष्टिः कीदृग्विधा प्रभो
O Lord, what was the nature of creation in the past kalpa of Brahma?
तेषां च कीदृशं कर्म यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि
And what were their actions? You should properly describe them.
वर्तमानदिनस्यापि दुर्ज्ञेयं प्रतिभाति मे
Even the present day's events seem difficult for me to know.
यो विजानाति तं ते ऽद्य कथयामि निशामय
He who knows, about him I shall tell you today—listen.
भुञ्जानो दिव्यभोगांश्च ब्रह्मलोकादिहागतः
Having enjoyed divine pleasures, he came here from the world of Brahma.
एवमुक्तस्तु गुरुणा शक्रस्तेन समन्वितः
Thus addressed by his teacher, Indra was accompanied by him.
देवतागणसंकीर्णः सुधर्मनिलयं ययौ
Surrounded by hosts of deities, he went to the abode of Sudharma.
दृष्ट्वा यथार्हं देवर्षे पूजयामास सादरम्
Seeing the sage as was proper, he worshipped him with respect.
मनसा विस्मयाविष्टः प्रोवाच विनयान्वितः
Filled with wonder in his mind, he spoke with humility.
तदाख्याहि समायात एतत्प्रष्टुं सयाजकः
Tell me, O sage, who has come here with the sacrificial priests to ask this.
तद्वदस्वाधिकः कस्मादस्मद्भ्यो ऽपि दिवि स्थितः
Explain, why is he superior, dwelling in heaven, even beyond us?
दानेन वा तपोभिर्वा कथमेतादृशः प्रभो
Is it by charity or by austerities, O Lord, that he has attained such greatness?
प्रोवाच विनयाविष्टः पूर्ववृत्तं यथाविधि
He spoke, filled with humility, recounting the former events as prescribed.
एकस्मिन् दिवसे शक्र मनवश्च चतुर्दश
On a certain day, O Indra, there were fourteen Manus.
इन्द्राणां चैव सर्वेषां मन्वादीनां च वासव
And likewise, O Vasava, all the Indras and the progenitors beginning with Manu.
तेषां नामानि वक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व सुसमाहितः
I shall tell you their names; listen attentively.
उत्तमस्तामसश्चैव रैवतश्चाक्षुषस्तथा
Uttama, Tāmasa, Raivata, and also Ākṣuṣa.
नवमो दक्षसावर्णिः सर्वदेवहिते रतः
The ninth is Dakṣa Sāvarṇi, devoted to the welfare of all the gods.
ततस्तु रुद्रसावर्णी रोचमानस्ततः स्मृतः
Then comes Rudra Sāvarṇi, and after him Rocamāna is remembered.
