दुर्वृत्ता वा सुवृत्ता वा तेभ्यो नित्यं नमोनमः
Whether they are of bad conduct or good conduct, I always bow again and again to them.
स भजेद्धरिभक्तानां भक्तान्वै पापहारिणः
He should worship the devotees of Hari, who remove sins.
समुद्धरति गोविन्दो दुस्तराद्भव सागरात्
Govinda lifts one up from the difficult ocean of worldly existence.
चिन्तयेद्यो हरेर्नाम तस्मै नित्यं नमो नमः
To the one who contemplates the name of Hari, I always bow again and again.
येषां मुक्तिः करस्थैव योगिनामपि दुर्लभा
Liberation rests in their hands, a state difficult even for yogis to attain.
वदतां शृण्वतां चैव सर्वपाप प्रणाशनम्
For those who speak and listen, all sins are destroyed.
जयध्वज इति ख्यातो नारायणपरायणः
He is known as Jayadhvaja, devoted to Narayana.
दीपदानरतश्चैव सर्वभूतदयापरः
He delights in giving lamps and is dedicated to compassion for all beings.
विचित्रकुसुमोपेतं कृतवान्विष्णुमन्दिरम्
He constructed a temple for Vishnu, adorned with various flowers.
दीपदानपरश्चैव विशेषेण हरिप्रियः
He is especially devoted to giving lamps and is beloved by Hari.
परिप्रणामनिरतो हरिभक्तजनप्रियः
He is constantly engaged in respectful salutations and is dear to the devotees of Hari.
जयध्वजस्य चरितं दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागतः
Seeing the deeds of Jayadhvaja, wonder arose.
अपृच्छद्वीतिहोत्रस्तु वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः
Vītihotra, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, questioned him.
विष्णुभक्तिमतां पुंसां श्रेष्ठो ऽसि भरतर्षभ
Among those devoted to Vishnu, you are the foremost, O best of the Bharatas.
तन्मे वद महाभाग किं त्वया विदितं फलम्
Tell me, O greatly fortunate one, what result is known to you?
संयुक्तो ऽसि सदा भद्रयद्विष्णोर्गृहमार्जने
You are always engaged in the auspicious cleaning of Vishnu's house.
तथापि किं महाभाग एतयोः सततोद्यतः
Yet, O greatly fortunate one, why are you always striving in these two acts?
तद् ब्रूहि मे गुह्यतमं प्रीतिर्मयि तवास्ति चेत्
If you have affection for me, tell me the most secret matter.
विनयावनतो भूत्वा प्रोवाचेजं कृताञ्जलिः
Becoming humble and bowing, he spoke with joined palms.
जातिस्मरत्वाज्जानामि श्रोतॄणां विस्मयप्रदम्
Because of remembrance from birth, I know what will astonish the listeners.
रैवतो नाम विप्रेन्द्रो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः
There was a Brahmin named Raivata, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches.
पिशुनो निष्ठुरश्चैव ह्यपण्यानां च विक्रयी
He was slanderous, harsh, and a seller of things not fit for trade.
दरिद्रो दुःखितश्चैव शीर्णाङ्गो व्याधितो ऽभवत्
He became poor, afflicted with suffering, his limbs wasted, and stricken by disease.
ममार नर्मदातीरे श्वासकासप्रपीडितः
Tormented by breathlessness and coughing, he died on the bank of the Narmada.
कामचारपरा सा तु परित्यक्ता च बन्धुभिः
She, devoted only to her own desires, was abandoned by her relatives.
महापापरतो नित्यं ब्रह्मद्वेषपरायणः
Constantly engaged in great sins, he was ever intent on enmity toward Brahmins.
गावश्च विप्रा बहवो निहता मृगपक्षिणः
Many cows, Brahmins, and countless deer and birds were slain.
मद्यपानरतो नित्यं बहुशो मार्गरोधकृत्
Always addicted to drinking liquor, he often blocked the roads.
कदाचित्कामसंतप्तो गन्तु कामो रतिं स्त्रियः
Once, inflamed by desire, he wished to go and enjoy a woman.
निशि रामोपभोगार्थं शयितं तत्र कामिना
At night, for the sake of pleasure, he lay there with a lover.
