उपासको जयेत्प्राणान्द्वन्द्वातीतो विमत्सरः
The practitioner should conquer the vital energies, transcend dualities, and be free from envy.
अभ्यासेन जयेत्प्राणान्निःशब्दे जनवर्जिते
Through practice, one should subdue the vital energies in silence and away from people.
प्राणायाम इति प्रोक्तो द्विविधः स प्रकीर्त्तितः
This is called prāṇāyāma, which is said to be of two kinds.
जयध्यानं विनागर्भः सगर्भस्तत्समन्वितः
Without meditative absorption it is called 'agarbha'; with absorption it is 'sagarbha'.
एवं चतुर्विधः प्रोक्तः प्राणायामो मनीषिभिः
Thus, prāṇāyāma is declared by the wise to be of four types.
सूर्यदैवतका चैव पितृयोनिरिति श्रुता
They are known as solar deity, ancestral origin, and so forth.
तत्राधिदैवत चन्द्रं जानीहि मुनिसत्तमं
Among these, know the moon as the presiding deity, O best of sages.
अतिसूक्ष्मा गुह्यतमा ज्ञेया सा ब्रह्मदैवता
The most subtle and secret one is to be understood as the Brahma-deity.
पूरयेद्दक्षिणेनैव पूरणात्पूरकः स्मृतः
One should fill the breath through the right nostril; this filling is called pūraka.
संपूर्णकुंभवत्तिष्टेत्कुम्भकः स हि विश्रुतः
One should remain as if holding a full pot; this is known as kumbhaka.
विद्धि तच्छून्यकं नाम प्राणायामं यथास्थितम्
Know that as śūnyaka prāṇāyāma, according to its established form.
अन्यथा खलु जायन्ते महारोगा भयङ्कराः
Otherwise, indeed, great and terrifying diseases arise.
स सर्वपापनिर्मुक्तो ब्रह्मणः पदमान्पुयात्
He, freed from all sins, attains the abode of Brahman.
समामाहृत्य निगृह्णाति प्रत्याहारस्तु स स्मृतः
Having gathered the senses and restrained them, this is called pratyāhāra.
प्रयान्ति परमं ब्रह्म पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभम्
They go to the supreme Brahman, which is difficult to return from.
मूढात्मानं च तं विद्याद्ध्यानं चास्य न सिध्यति
Know him as one whose mind is deluded; for him, meditation does not succeed.
प्रत्याहृतानीन्द्रियाणि धारयेत्सा तु धारणा
Withdrawing the senses and holding them steady—that is called dhāraṇā, concentration.
आत्मानं परमं ध्यायेत्सर्वधातारमच्युतम्
One should meditate on the supreme Self, the unfailing sustainer of all elements.
विकसत्पद्यपत्राक्षं चारुकुण्डलभूषितम्
With eyes like blossoming lotus petals, adorned with beautiful earrings.
पीताम्बरधरं देवं हेमयज्ञोपवीतिनम्
Clad in yellow garments, the divine one, wearing a golden sacred thread.
श्रीवत्सवक्षसं देवं सुरासुरनमस्कृतम्
The divine one whose chest bears the mark of Śrīvatsa, honored by gods and demons alike.
ध्यायेदात्मानमव्यक्तं परात्परतरं विभुमट्
One should meditate on the Self as unmanifest, supreme beyond the supreme, and all-pervading.
ध्यानं कृत्वा मुहुर्त्तं वा परं मोक्षं लभेन्नरः
By practicing meditation, even for a moment, a person attains the highest liberation.
ध्यानात्प्रसीदति हरिद्धर्यानात्सर्वार्थसाधनम्
Through meditation, Hari becomes pleased; through concentration, all purposes are fulfilled.
तेन ध्यानेन तुष्टात्मा हरिर्मोक्षं ददाति वै
When the soul is satisfied by that meditation, Hari indeed grants liberation.
ध्यानं ध्येयं ध्यातृभावं यथा नश्यति निर्भरम्
When meditation, the object of meditation, and the meditator's sense of self completely dissolve.
भवेन्निरन्तरं ध्यानादभेदप्रतिपादनम्
Through uninterrupted meditation, the realization of non-difference arises.
निर्वातदीपवत्संस्थः समाधिरभिधीयते
When established like a lamp sheltered from wind, that state is called samādhi.
न जिघ्रति न स्पृशति न किञ्चद्वक्ति सत्तम
He does not smell, touch, or speak anything, O noble one.
सर्वोपाधिविनिर्मुक्तो योगिनां भात्यचञ्चलः
Freed from all limiting conditions, the yogi shines, unwavering.
