ततश्च हस्तपादाकर्षणे न तु क्षमो रुद्रद्भिबन्धुजनैर्वेष्टितो वक्तुमक्षमः स्वार्जितधनादिकं कस्य भविष्यतीति चिन्तापरो बाष्पाविलविलोचनः कण्ठे वुरघुरायमाणे सति शरीरान्निष्क्रान्तप्राणो यमदूतैर्भर्त्स्यमानः पाशयन्त्रितो नरकादीन्पूर्ववदश्नुते
Then, unable to move his hands and feet, surrounded by weeping relatives and friends, unable to speak, preoccupied with thoughts of who will possess his earned wealth and property, his eyes filled with tears, as his throat rattles, when his life departs from his body, he is seized by the messengers of Yama, bound with fetters, and experiences hell and other realms as before.
तथैव जीविनः सर्व आकर्मप्रक्षयाद् भृशम्
In the same way, all living beings, until the exhaustion of their karma, undergo intense suffering.
अभ्यसेत्परमं ज्ञानं ज्ञानान्मोक्षमवान्पुयात्
One should practice supreme knowledge; through knowledge, one attains liberation.
तस्मात्संसारमोक्षाय परं ज्ञानं समभ्यसेत्
Therefore, for liberation from worldly existence, one should diligently cultivate supreme knowledge.
हरिं न सेवते यस्तु को ऽन्यस्तस्मादचेतनः
Whoever does not serve Hari—who else is as insensible as he?
आस्थिते कामदे विष्णो नरा यान्ति हि यातनाम्
Men who are attached to desires, not to Viṣṇu, indeed go to suffering.
स्थिते ऽपि ज्ञानरहिताः पच्यन्ते नरकेष्वहो
Even while alive, those devoid of knowledge are tormented in hell—alas!
शाश्वतं भावयन्त्यज्ञा महामोहसमावृताः
The ignorant, enveloped in great delusion, imagine the world to be eternal.
संसारच्छेदकं विष्णुं न भजेत्सो ऽतिपातकी
He who does not worship Viṣṇu, the destroyer of worldly bondage, is a great sinner.
हरिध्यानपरो विप्र चण्डालो ऽपि महासुखी
Even a caṇḍāla devoted to meditation on Hari, O brāhmaṇa, attains great happiness.
उद्वेग मानवा मूर्खाः किं न यान्ति हि पापिनः
Why would not sinful, foolish men, full of anxiety, go to ruin?
तल्लब्ध्वा परलोकार्थं यत्नं कुर्य्याद्विचक्षणः
Having obtained this, the wise should strive for the good of the next world.
लभन्ते परमं स्थानं पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभम्
They attain the supreme state, which is difficult to return from.
यस्मिंश्च विलयं याति स संसारस्य मोचकः
He in whom dissolution occurs is the liberator from worldly existence.
तं समभ्यर्च्य देवेशं संसारात्परिमुच्यते
By worshipping that Lord of gods, one is freed from worldly existence.
संसारपाशबद्धानां दुःखानि सुबहूनि च
For those bound by the fetters of worldly existence, there are indeed many sufferings.
येनोपायेन मोक्षः स्यात्तन्मे ब्रूहि तपोधन
By what means can liberation be attained? Tell me that, O possessor of austerity.
भुज्यन्ते च मुनिश्रेष्ठ तेषां नाशः कथं भवेत्
And, O best of sages, how can their sufferings be destroyed?
कामाल्लोभाभिभूतः स्याल्लोभात्क्रोधपरायणाः
Overcome by desire, a man becomes greedy; from greed, he becomes given to anger.
प्रनष्टबुद्धिर्मनुजः पुनः पापं करोति च
A man whose intellect is lost again commits sin.
यथा देहभ्रमत्यक्त्वा मोक्षभाक्स्यात्तथा वद
Just as one attains liberation after leaving the body, speak in that manner.
यस्मात्संसारदुःखान्नो मोक्षोपायमभीप्ससि
Because you desire a means of liberation from the sufferings of worldly existence—
हरिश्च पालको रुद्रो नाशकः स हि मोक्षदः
Hari is the protector, Rudra is the destroyer; he indeed is the giver of liberation.
तं विद्यान्मोक्षदं विष्णुं नारायणमनामयम्
Know that Vishnu, Narayana, free from affliction, is the giver of liberation.
तमुग्रमजरं देवं ध्यात्वा दुःखात्प्रमुच्यते
By meditating on that mighty, ageless god, one is freed from suffering.
ज्ञानरुपं सदानन्दं प्राहुर्वैमोक्षसाधनम्
They declare that knowledge, ever-blissful in form, is the means to liberation.
समर्चयन्ति तं विद्याच्छाश्वतस्थानदं हरिम्
Know that those who worship Hari, the giver of the eternal abode, are wise.
हृदि पश्यन्ति यं सत्यं तं जामीहि सुखावहम्
Those who see the true one in their heart, know him as the bringer of happiness.
आकाशमध्यगः पूर्णस्तं प्राहुर्मोक्षदं नृणाम्
They declare that the one who is full, abiding in the midst of space, is the giver of liberation to men.
अनूपमो ऽखिलाधारस्तां देवं शरणं व्रजेत्
He is incomparable, the support of all; one should take refuge in that god.
