कायकृच्छ्रं चरेत्सम्यगन्यथा पतितो भवेत्
One should properly perform the bodily penance; otherwise, one becomes fallen.
संगङ्कृत्वार्द्धमासं तु द्वादशाहमुपावसेत्
Having engaged in intercourse, one should fast for twelve days or for half a month.
कृत्वा संगं तु षण्मासं चरेच्चान्द्रायणद्वयम्
Having engaged in intercourse, one should observe two Chandrayana vows for six months.
एतच्च त्रिगुणं प्रोक्तं ज्ञानात्संगे यथाक्रमम्
This is declared to be threefold, according to knowledge and the sequence of intercourse.
मार्जाराजाविकं श्वानं हत्वा कुक्कुटकं तथा
Having killed a cat, a goat, a dog, or a cock,
जत्पकृच्छ्रं करिवधे पराकं गोवधे स्मृतम्
The penance for killing an elephant is the Jatpakṛcchra; for killing a cow, the Paraka is prescribed.
पानशय्यासनाद्येषु पुष्पमूलफलेषु च
Regarding drinking, sleeping, sitting, and so forth, and with flowers, roots, and fruits,
शुष्ककाष्टतृणानां च द्रुमाणां च गुडस्य च
And with dry wood, grass, trees, and also with molasses,
टिट्टिभं चक्रवाकं च हंसं कारण्डवं तथा
The titibha bird, the chakravaka, the swan, and the karandava likewise.
शुकं चाषं बलाकं च शिशुमारं च कच्छपम्
The parrot, the crow, the crane, the dolphin, and the tortoise.
प्राजापत्यव्रतं कुर्याद्रेतोविण्मूत्रभोजने
One should observe the Prajapatya vow, eating only what is touched by semen, urine, or excrement.
रजस्वलां च चाण्डालं महापातकिनं तथा
After touching a menstruating woman, a Chandala, or a great sinner,
स्पृष्ट्वा सचैलं स्नायीत घृतं संप्राशेयत्तथा
Having touched them while clothed, one should bathe; likewise, clarified butter should be consumed.
एतेष्वन्यतमं स्पृष्ट्वा अज्ञानाधद्यदि भोजने
If, out of ignorance, one touches any of these during eating,
स्नानदानजपादौ च भोजनादौ च नारद
During bathing, giving, reciting, or eating, O Narada,
उद्वमेद्धुक्तमंन्नतत्स्त्रात्वा चोपवसेत्तथा
One should vomit the food, protect oneself, and then fast.
व्रतादिमध्ये यद्येषा शृणुयाद्धूनिमप्युत
If, in the midst of vows or similar observances, one hears even ashes,
पापानामधिकं पापं द्विजदैवतनिन्दनम्
Among sins, the greatest sin is reviling twice-borns or deities.
महापातकतुल्यानि यानि प्रोक्तानि सूरिभिः
Those acts declared by sages as equal to great sins,
प्रायश्चित्तानि यः कुर्यान्नारायणपरायणः
Whoever performs expiations, devoted to Narayana,
यस्तु रागादिनिर्मुक्तो ह्यनुतापसमन्वितः
But one who is free from passion and endowed with repentance,
महापातकयुक्तो वा युक्तो वा सर्वपातकैः
Whether joined with great sins or with all sins,
नारायणमनान्द्यन्तं विश्वाकारमनामयम्
If he fixes his mind on Narayana, the universal form, the flawless,
स्मृतो वा पूजितो वापि ध्यातः प्रणमितो ऽपि वा
Whether remembered, worshipped, meditated upon, or saluted,
संपर्काद्यदि वा मोहाद्यस्तु पूजयते हरिम्
If anyone worships Hari, whether by association or by delusion,
सकृत्संस्मरणाद्विष्णोर्नश्यन्ति क्लेशसंचयाः
By even a single remembrance of Vishnu, the accumulation of afflictions is destroyed.
मानुषं दुर्लभं जन्म प्राप्यते यैर्मुनीश्वर
O best of sages, those who obtain a human birth, which is so difficult to attain—
तस्मात्तडिल्लतालोलं मानुष्यं प्राप्य दुर्लभम्
Therefore, having gained this rare human life, which is as fleeting as a flash of lightning—
सर्वे ऽन्तराया नश्यन्ति मनःशुद्धिश्च जायते
All obstacles are destroyed, and purity of mind arises.
धर्मार्थकामोक्षाख्याः पुरुषार्थाः सनातनाः
The eternal aims of human life are called dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa.
