तत्र सांतपनं कृत्वा द्वादशाहोपवासतः
There, having performed the sāṃtapana penance, he should fast for twelve days.
रन्तासनमनुष्यस्त्रीधेनुभूम्यादिकेषु च
A person who sits on another's seat, or takes cows, land, and the like,
त्रसरेणुसमं हेम हृत्वा कुर्यात्समाहितः
Having stolen gold equal to a speck of dust, one should perform penance with concentration.
प्राणायामत्रयं कुर्याद्धृत्वा निष्कप्रमाणकम्
After taking gold the size of a niṣka, one should perform the threefold prāṇāyāma.
गौरसर्षपमानं तु हृत्वा हेम विचक्षणः
If a wise man steals gold equal in weight to a cow’s mustard seed, he should act accordingly.
यवमात्रसुवर्णस्य स्तेयाच्छुद्धो भवेद्दिजः
A twice-born who steals gold the size of a barley grain becomes purified.
हेम कृष्णलमात्रं तु हृत्वा सांतपनं चरेत्
But having stolen gold the size of a black mustard seed, one should undertake the sāṃtapana penance.
गोमूत्रपक्वयवभुग्वर्षेणैकेन शुद्ध्यति
By eating barley cooked in cow’s urine for one year, purification is attained.
ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं कुर्याद्द्वादशाब्दं समाहितः
One should observe the vow for slaying a Brahmin for twelve years with concentration.
कुर्यात्सांतपनं सम्यगन्यथा पतितो भवेत्
One should properly perform the sāṃtapana penance; otherwise, one becomes fallen.
हत्वा च रजतं विद्वान्कुर्याच्चान्द्रायणं मुने
If one steals silver, O sage, the learned should perform the cāndrāyaṇa penance.
चान्द्रायणद्वयं तस्य प्रोक्तं पापविशोधकम्
Two cāndrāyaṇa penances are prescribed for him as purifiers of sin.
सहस्रादधिकस्तेये ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं चरेत्
For theft exceeding a thousand, one should undertake the vow for slaying a Brahmin.
सहस्रनिष्कमाने तु पराकं परिकीर्तितम्
When the amount is a thousand niṣkas, the parāka penance is declared.
गुरुतल्पगतानां च प्रायश्चित्तमुदीर्यते
Now the expiation for those who approach the teacher’s wife is declared.
स्वयमेव स्वमुष्कं तु च्छिन्द्यात्पापमुदीरयन्
He should himself cut off his own scrotum, proclaiming his sin.
गच्छन्मार्गै सुखं दुःखं न कदाचिद्विचारयेत्
While going on the path, whether in happiness or suffering, he should never reflect.
मरुत्प्रपतनं वापि कुर्यात्पापमुदाहरन्
Or, declaring his sin, he may leap from a precipice or into the wind.
ब्राह्महत्याव्रतं कुर्याद्वादशाब्दं समाहितः
He should observe the vow for slaying a Brahmin for twelve years with concentration.
कारीषवह्निना दग्धः शुद्धिं याति द्विजोत्तम
Burned by a fire of cow dung, the best of twice-born becomes purified.
ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं कुर्याद्रेतः सेके ऽग्निदाहनम्
One should undertake the vow for slaying a Brahmin in the case of emission of semen or burning by fire.
ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं कुर्यान्नवाब्दान्विष्णुतत्परः
One should observe the vow for slaying a Brahmin for nine years, being devoted to Vishnu.
गत्वा शूद्वां गुरोर्भार्यां त्रिवर्षं व्रतमाचरेत्
Having approached and violated the wife of the teacher, one should practice the vow for three years.
पितृव्यभार्यामथ मातुलानीं पुत्रीं च गच्छेद्यदि काममुग्धः
If, being deluded by desire, one goes to the wife of the paternal uncle, the maternal aunt, or the daughter,
एकस्मिन्नेव दिवसे बहुवारं त्रिवार्षिकम्
On a single day, if it happens many times, the three-year vow applies.
दिनत्रये गते वह्निदग्धः शुध्येत नान्यथा
After three days have passed, one is purified only if burned by fire, not otherwise.
मित्रस्त्रियं शिष्यपत्नीं यस्तु वै कामतो व्रजेत्
Whoever, out of desire, approaches the wife of a friend or the wife of a disciple,
अकामतो व्रजेद्यस्तु सो ऽब्दकृच्छ्रं समाचरेत्
But whoever approaches without desire should perform the one-year penance.
प्रायश्चित्तविशुद्धात्मा सर्वकर्मफलं लभेत्
With a mind purified by atonement, one attains the fruit of all actions.
तत्तद्व्रतं स निव्रर्त्य शुद्धिमान्पोत्यसंशयम्
Having completed each respective vow, one becomes pure, without doubt.
