तत्सर्वं निष्फलं प्रोक्तं राक्षसैः परिसेवितम्
All that is declared fruitless, attended by demons.
प्रष्टव्या ब्राह्मणा धर्मं सर्वधर्मफलेच्छुभिः
Brahmins should be asked about dharma by those desiring the fruit of all dharmas.
न निष्पुनन्ति विप्रेन्द्र सुराभाण्डमिवापगाः
O best of Brahmins, rivers do not purify a vessel of liquor.
महापातकिननस्त्वेते तत्संसर्गी च पञ्चमः
These are great sinners, and the one who associates with them is the fifth.
संवसेत्सह तं विद्यात्पतितं सर्वकर्मसु
One who dwells with them should be known as fallen in all actions.
स्वेनैव हतविप्रस्य कपालमपि धारयेत्
He should even carry the skull of the slain Brahmin with his own hand.
तद्द्रव्यं ध्वजदण्डे तु धृत्वा वनचरो भवेत्
Having placed that substance upon the flagstaff, one should live as a forest-dweller.
सम्यक्संध्यामुपासीत त्रिकालं स्नानमाचरेत्
He should properly worship at the three sandhyā times and perform bathing thrice daily.
ब्रह्मचारी भवेन्नित्यं गन्धमाल्यादि वर्जयेत्
He must always remain a celibate, avoiding fragrance, garlands, and the like.
यदि वन्यैर्न जीवेत ग्रामे भिक्षां समाचरेत्
If he cannot subsist on forest produce, he should seek alms in the village.
ब्रह्महा शुद्धिमान्पोति कर्मार्हश्चैव जायते
A slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, once purified, becomes eligible for ritual acts.
गोनिमित्तं द्विजार्थं वा प्राणान्वापि परित्यजेत्
He should relinquish his life for the sake of a cow, a twice-born, or even for living beings.
एतेष्वन्यतमं कृत्वा ब्रह्महा शुद्धिमान्पुयात्
By performing any one of these, the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa attains purity.
अग्निप्रवेशनं वापि मरुत्प्रपतनं तथा
Entering fire or casting oneself into the wind are also prescribed.
आचार्यादिवधे चैव व्रतमुक्तं चतुर्गुणम्
For the killing of a teacher and others, the penance is fourfold.
एवं विप्रस्य गदितः प्रायश्चित्तविधिर्द्विज
Thus has the expiation for a Brāhmaṇa been declared, O twice-born.
ब्राह्मणं हॄन्ति यः शूद्रस्तं मुशल्यं विर्दुर्बुधाः
A Śūdra who kills a Brāhmaṇa is condemned as a 'muśalya' by the wise.
ब्राह्मणीनां वधे त्वर्द्धं पादः स्यात्कन्यकावधे
For the killing of a Brāhmaṇa woman, half; for a maiden, a quarter.
हत्वा तु क्षत्रियं विप्रः षडब्दं कुच्छ्रमाचरेत्
If a Brāhmaṇa kills a Kṣatriya, he should perform penance for six years.
दीक्षितस्य स्त्रियं हत्वा ब्राह्मणी चाष्टवत्सरान्
Having killed the wife of an initiated man, a Brāhmaṇa must do penance for eight years.
प्रावश्चित्तं विधानं तु सर्वत्र मुनिसत्तम
The prescription for expiation applies everywhere, O best of sages.
गौडी पैष्टी च माध्वी च विज्ञेया त्रिविधा सुरा
Gauḍī, Paiṣṭī, and Mādhvī are to be known as the three kinds of liquor.
क्षीरं घृतं वा गोमूत्रमेतेष्वन्यतमं मुने
Milk, ghee, or cow urine—any one of these, O sage.
पक्वायसनिभं कृत्वा पिबेज्चैवोदकं ततः
Having made it resemble cooked iron, one should then drink water.
ताम्रेण वाथं पात्रेण तत्पीत्वा मरणं व्रजेत्
By drinking it from a copper vessel, one meets death.
अज्ञानादात्मबुद्द्या तु सुरां पीत्वा द्विजश्चरेत्
If a twice-born drinks liquor out of ignorance, thinking it is not so, he should live accordingly.
यदि रोगानिवृत्त्यर्थमौषधार्थं सुरां पिबेत्
If one drinks liquor for the purpose of curing disease or as medicine,
सुरासंस्पृष्टपात्रं तु सुराभाण्डोदकं तथा
A vessel touched by liquor, and likewise water from a liquor container,
तालं च पानसं चैव द्राक्षं खार्जूरसंभवम्
Palm liquor, pānasa, grape, and that which comes from dates,
गौडी माध्वी सुरा मद्यमेवमेकादश स्मृताः
Gauḍī, Mādhvī, surā, and madya—thus, eleven kinds are remembered.
