I will now explain the procedure for anvādhāna, O noble ones, in full detail regarding the festival days.
On festival days, the first three tithis are to be taken as a quarter portion each.
There are two midday periods, as well as the new moon and full moon days.
O best of Brahmins, the prescribed time is set for the following day or immediately.
The immediate time or the next day is to be understood thus, when the tithi expires.
When the tenth tithi is combined, the merit acquired spans three births.
If the twelfth tithi occurs on the thirteenth, it is considered superior.
If the thirteenth tithi falls at the end of the night, I will declare the decision regarding that.
Householders seek accomplishment, while ascetics desire liberation.
At that time, even if the tenth tithi is mixed, one should fast on the eleventh tithi.
For householders, the previously mentioned rule applies; for ascetics, the later one is remembered.
When the day ends, only the second tithi is prescribed for all.
Even if it is not mixed, the twelfth tithi is prohibited if it follows thereafter.
The merit of the twelfth tithi is obtained by breaking the fast on the thirteenth.
The twelfth tithi may or may not occur on the thirteenth.
If the later tithi is to be accepted, it should be taken only if it is not weak.
If the twelfth tithi occurs on the thirteenth, how should it be observed?
Some say, out of devotion, that only the second tithi should be fasted.
There are also others who observe the twelfth and thirteenth days in that same manner.
Some declare the earlier day, but that opinion is not appropriate.
A householder who has a son should not perform the breaking of the fast or the fasting itself.
On the eleventh day, after eating for a day and night, one should undertake the Chandrayana vow.
If one eats when he should not, he becomes equal to one who drinks liquor.
O best of sages, at that time, expiation should be performed by those who are engaged in sacrifices.
With the Ṛc verse 'Āpyāyasva', and the phrase 'having drunk Soma', O twice-born, (expiation is made).
In the Asatyeṃnodvaya, three mantras are cited.
Whoever performs vows and similar observances obtains inexhaustible reward.
Therefore, those devoted to dharma attain the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
Therefore, worldly affliction never troubles those people.
One whose soul is purified by expiation obtains the fruit of all actions.
