तस्माद्दाता च भोक्ता च सर्वं विष्णुः सनातनः
Therefore, the giver and the enjoyer—everything is Viṣṇu, the eternal.
सर्वं विष्णुमयं ज्ञेयं तस्मादन्यन्न विद्यते
All this should be understood as pervaded by Viṣṇu; nothing else exists.
अनौपम्यस्वभावश्च भगवान्हव्यकव्यभुक्
The Blessed Lord, the enjoyer of offerings to gods and ancestors, is of incomparable nature.
कर्त्ता कारयिता चैव सर्वं विष्णुः सनातनः
Viṣṇu, the eternal, is both the doer and the cause of action—everything is Viṣṇu.
कथितः कुर्वतामेवं पापं सद्यो विलीयते
When performed in this way, sin is immediately destroyed.
पितरस्तस्य तुष्यन्ति संततिश्चैव वर्द्धते
His ancestors are pleased, and his lineage indeed flourishes.
शृणुष्व तन्मुनिश्रेष्ठ कर्मसिद्धिर्यतो भवेत्
Listen, O best of sages, to that by which the success of actions is attained.
अनिर्णीतासु तिथिषु न किञ्चित्फलति द्विज
On days whose lunar dates are not determined, nothing bears fruit, O twice-born one.
अमावास्या तृतीया च ह्युपवासव्रतादिषु
The new moon and the third lunar day are indeed for fasting and vows.
नागविद्धा तु या षष्टी शिवविद्धा तु सत्पमी
The sixth day joined with the star Nāga, and the seventh joined with Śiva—
दर्शं च पौर्णमासीं च सत्पमीं पितृवासरम्
The new moon, the full moon, the seventh day, and the day for ancestors—
कृष्णपक्षे पूर्वविद्धां सत्पमीं च चतुर्दशीम्
In the dark fortnight, the seventh day joined with the previous day, and the fourteenth day—
व्रतादीनां तु सर्वेषां शुक्लपक्षो विशिष्यते
Of all vows and observances, the bright fortnight is especially praised.
असंभवे व्रतादीनां यदि पौर्वाह्निकी तिथिः
If it is not possible to perform vows and the like, then the lunar day in the forenoon is to be taken.
प्रदोषव्यापिनी ग्राह्या तिथिर्नक्तव्रते सदा
If it extends into the evening, that lunar day is always to be accepted for night vows.
तिथिनक्षत्रसंयोगविहितव्रतकर्मणि
When a vow or rite is prescribed by the conjunction of lunar day and constellation—
अर्द्धरात्रादधो या तु नक्षत्रव्यापिनी तिथिः
If the lunar day extends below midnight, joined with the constellation—
यद्यर्द्धरात्रघगयोर्व्यात्पं नक्षत्रं तु दिनद्वये
If the constellation extends over two half-nights—
अर्द्धरात्रद्वये स्यातां नक्षत्रं च तिथिर्यदि
If both the constellation and the lunar day extend over two half-nights—
अर्ध्दरात्रद्वयव्यात्पा तिथिर्नक्षत्रघसंयुता
When the lunar day, joined with the constellation, extends over two half-nights—
ज्येष्ठासंमिश्रितं मूलं रोहिणी वह्निंसंयुता
Mūla joined with Jyeṣṭhā, and Rohiṇī joined with Agni—
ततः स्युस्तिथयः पुण्याः कर्मानुष्टानतो दिवा
Then, by performing the rites, those lunar days become auspicious during the day.
तिथिर्नक्षघत्रयोगेन या पुण्या परिकीर्तिता
A lunar day is called auspicious when it coincides with a specific star and conjunction.
उदयव्यापिनी ग्राह्या श्रवणद्वादशी व्रते

माकरं संक्रमं प्राहुरुत्तरायणसंज्ञकम्
