भुज्यमानेषु विप्रेषु कर्त्ता श्रद्धापरायणः
while the Brahmins are eating, the performer, intent on faith,
रक्षोघ्नान्वैष्णवांश्चैव पैतृकांश्चविशेषतः
should recite the Rakṣoghna, Vaiṣṇava, and especially the Paitṛka hymns.
त्रिमधु त्रिसुपर्णं च पावमानं यजूंषि च
The Trimadhu, Trisuparṇa, Pavamāna, and Yajus verses,
इतिहासपुराणानि धर्मशास्त्राणि चैव हि
as well as the Itihāsas, Purāṇas, and indeed the Dharmaśāstras.
ब्राह्मणेषु च भुक्तेषु विकिरं विक्षिपेत्तथा
When the Brahmins have eaten, he should scatter the remnants accordingly.
स्वयं च पादौ प्रक्षघाल्य सम्यगाचम्य नारद
And he himself, O Nārada, should thoroughly wash his feet and perform proper purification.
स्वस्तिवा चनकं कुर्यादक्षय्योदकमेव च
One should also perform the svasti rite with parched grain and offer inexhaustible water.
अचालयित्वा पात्रं तु स्वस्ति कुर्वन्ति ये द्विजाः
Those twice-born who perform the svasti rite without moving the vessel are blessed.
दातारो नो ऽभिवर्द्धन्तामित्याद्यैः स्मृतिभाषितैः
With words from the Smṛtis such as, 'May the givers prosper,' one should recite accordingly.
दद्याच्च दक्षिणां शक्त्या तांबूलं गन्धसंयुतम्
One should give, according to ability, a gift accompanied by betel and fragrant substances.
वाजेवाजे इति ऋचा पितॄन्देवान्विसर्जयेत्
With the Ṛc verse 'vājevāje,' one should dismiss the ancestors and the gods.
तथा स्वाध्यायमध्वानं प्रयत्नेन परित्यजेत्
Likewise, one should diligently set aside the recitation of one's own Veda.
आमश्राद्धं प्रकुर्वीत हेम्ना वास्तृश्यभार्यकः
One who is without a wife or son should perform the āmaśrāddha with gold.
पैतृकेन तु सूक्तेन होमं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः
The wise should perform the homa with the ancestral hymn.
स्नात्वा च विधिवद्विप्र कुर्याद्वा तिलतपर्णम्
Having bathed properly, O Brāhmaṇa, one should offer sesame and leaves as prescribed.
दरिद्रो ऽहं महापापी वदन्निति विचक्षणः
The wise man who says, 'I am poor, I am a great sinner,'—
तत्कुलं नाशमायाति ब्रह्महत्यां च विन्दति
That family comes to ruin and incurs the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa.
न तेषां संततिच्छेदः संपन्नास्ते भवन्ति च
There is no break in their lineage; they become prosperous.
तस्मिंस्तुष्टे जगन्नाथे सर्वास्तुष्यन्ति देवताः
When the Lord of the universe is pleased, all the deities are satisfied.
यक्षाश्च सिद्धा मनुजा हरिरेव सनातनः
The Yakṣas, Siddhas, humans, and Hari, the eternal one, as well.
तस्माद्दाता च भोक्ता च सर्वं विष्णुः सनातनः
Therefore, the giver and the enjoyer—everything is Viṣṇu, the eternal.
सर्वं विष्णुमयं ज्ञेयं तस्मादन्यन्न विद्यते
All this should be understood as pervaded by Viṣṇu; nothing else exists.
अनौपम्यस्वभावश्च भगवान्हव्यकव्यभुक्
The Blessed Lord, the enjoyer of offerings to gods and ancestors, is of incomparable nature.
कर्त्ता कारयिता चैव सर्वं विष्णुः सनातनः
Viṣṇu, the eternal, is both the doer and the cause of action—everything is Viṣṇu.
कथितः कुर्वतामेवं पापं सद्यो विलीयते
When performed in this way, sin is immediately destroyed.
पितरस्तस्य तुष्यन्ति संततिश्चैव वर्द्धते
His ancestors are pleased, and his lineage indeed flourishes.
शृणुष्व तन्मुनिश्रेष्ठ कर्मसिद्धिर्यतो भवेत्
Listen, O best of sages, to that by which the success of actions is attained.
अनिर्णीतासु तिथिषु न किञ्चित्फलति द्विज
On days whose lunar dates are not determined, nothing bears fruit, O twice-born one.
अमावास्या तृतीया च ह्युपवासव्रतादिषु
The new moon and the third lunar day are indeed for fasting and vows.
नागविद्धा तु या षष्टी शिवविद्धा तु सत्पमी
The sixth day joined with the star Nāga, and the seventh joined with Śiva—
