गायत्र्यै च सवित्रे च प्रक्षिपेदञ्जलिद्रूयम्
One should offer water with joined palms to Gāyatrī and Sāvitrī.
ब्रह्मणेशेन हरिणानुज्ञाता गच्छ सादरम्
Having been permitted by Brahmā, Śiva, and Hari, depart with reverence.
प्रातरादेः परं कर्म कुर्यादपि विधानतः
After the morning rites, one should perform other duties as prescribed.
वानप्रस्थश्च देवर्षे स्नायात्र्निषवणं यतिः
O divine sage, the forest-dweller and the ascetic should bathe and perform purification.
ब्रह्मयज्ञं ततः कुर्याद्दर्भपाणिर्मुनीश्वर
Then, O best of sages, holding darbha grass in hand, one should perform the Brahma-yajña.
शर्वर्याः प्रथमे यामे तानि कुर्याद्यथाक्रमम्
During the first watch of the night, one should perform these acts in the proper order.
पाषण्डः स हि विज्ञेयः सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृतः
He should be known as a heretic, excluded from all duties of dharma.
परित्यजति तं विद्यान्महापातकिनां वरम्
It is better to abandon him, for he is to be regarded as a great sinner.
ते यान्ति नरकान्घोरान्यावच्चन्द्रार्कतारकम्
They go to terrible hells for as long as the moon, sun, and stars endure.
तत्रात्यमतिथिं सम्यगन्नाद्यैश्च प्रपूजयेत्
There, one should properly honor a guest with food and other offerings.
जलान्नकन्दमूलैर्वा गृहदानेन चार्चयेत्
One should also worship with water, cooked food, roots, and fruits, or by giving from one's household.
सतस्मैदुष्कृतं दत्त्वा पुण्यमादाय गच्छति
By giving to a worthy person, one transfers one's sins and departs with merit.
विपश्चितो ऽतिथिं प्राहुर्विष्णुवत्तं प्रपूजयेत्
The wise declare that a guest should be honored as one would honor Viṣṇu.
अन्नाद्यैः प्रत्यहं विप्रपितॄनुद्दिश्य तर्पयेत्
Every day, one should satisfy the Brāhmaṇas and ancestors with food and drink.
कुर्यादहरहस्तस्मात्पञ्चयज्ञान्प्रयन्ततः
Therefore, one should perform the five daily sacrifices without fail.
नृपज्ञो ब्रह्मयज्ञश्च पञ्चयज्ञान्प्रचक्षते
The king and the sacrifice to Brahman are also counted among the five sacrifices.
द्विजानां भोज्यमश्री यात्पात्रं नैव परित्यजेत्
One should not abandon the vessel containing food meant for the twice-born, even if it is lacking in wealth.
मुखेन वमितं भुक्त्वा सुरापीत्युच्यते बुधैः
Food that has been vomited from the mouth after eating is declared by the wise to be like liquor.
प्रत्यक्षं लवणं चैव गोमांसशीति गद्यते
Salt taken directly, and also beef, are both said to be impure.
शब्द न कारयेद्विप्रस्तं कुर्वन्नारकी भवेत्
One should not make a sound in the presence of a Brāhmaṇa; doing so leads to hell.
अमृतोपस्तरणमसि अपोशानं भुजेः पुरः
You are the immortal covering; water is to be sipped before eating.
प्राणाद्या आहुतीर्दत्त्वाचम्य भोजनमाचरेत्
Having offered the initial oblations and sipped water, one should then partake of food.
रात्रावपि यथाशक्ति शयनासनभोजनैः
Even at night, according to one's ability, one should provide bed, seat, and food.
यदाऽचारपरित्यागी प्रायश्चित्ती तदा भवेत्
When one abandons proper conduct, then expiation becomes necessary.
पुत्रेषु भार्यां निःक्षिप्य वनं गच्छेत्सहैव वा
Entrusting his wife to his sons, he should go to the forest, either alone or with her.
अधः शायी ब्रह्मचारी पञ्चयज्ञपरायणः
Lying on the ground, practicing celibacy, and devoted to the five sacrifices.
दयावान्सर्वभूतेषु नारायणपरायणः
Compassionate toward all beings, devoted solely to Narayana.
अष्टौ ग्रासांश्च भुञ्जीत न कुर्याद्रात्रिभोजनम्
He should eat eight morsels of food, and must not take meals at night.
व्यवायं वर्जयेच्चैव निद्रालस्ये तथैव च
He should abstain from sexual activity, and likewise avoid sleep and laziness.
वानप्रस्थः प्रकुर्वीत तपश्चान्द्रायणादिकम्
The forest-dweller should undertake austerities such as the Chandrayana and similar practices.
