कनिष्टाङ्गुष्टयोगेन नाभिदेशे स्पृशेद्द्विजः
With the thumb and little finger joined, a twice-born should touch the navel region.
तलेन चाङ्गुलाग्रैर्वा स्पृशेदंसौ विचक्षणः
With the palm or with the fingertips, a wise person should touch the shoulders.
दन्तकाष्टं ततः खादेत्सत्वचं शस्तवृक्षजम्
Then, one should chew a tooth-stick, with bark, from a proper tree.
प्रक्षाल्य वारिणा चैव मन्त्रेणाप्यभिमन्त्रितम्
And after washing it with water, or consecrating it with a mantra,
ब्रह्म प्रज्ञां च मेधां च त्वन्नो धेहि वनस्पते
"O tree, grant me Brahman, wisdom, and intelligence from yourself."
नवाङ्गुलं क्षत्रियश्च वैश्यश्चाष्टाङ्गुलोन्मितम्
For a Kshatriya, the tooth-stick should be nine finger-breadths; for a Vaishya, eight finger-breadths in length.
अलाभे दैतकाष्टानां गण्डूषैर्भानुसंमितैः
If tooth-sticks from proper trees are unavailable, one should use mouthfuls of water equal to the measure of the sun.
करेणादाय वामेन संचर्वेद्वामदंष्ट्रया
Taking it with the left hand, one should rub with the left canine tooth.
जिह्वामुल्लिख्य ताभ्यां तु दलुभ्यां नियतेन्द्रियः
Having scraped the tongue with those two, one who has controlled the senses,
ततः स्नानं प्रकुर्वीत नद्यादौ विमले जले
Then should perform bathing at the beginning of a river, or in pure water.
प्रणम्य तत्र तीर्थानि आवाह्य रविमण्डलात्
There, bowing to the sacred fords, and invoking them from the solar orb,
स्नायान्मन्त्रान्स्मरन्पुण्यांस्तीर्थानि च विरिञ्चिज
One should bathe, remembering the auspicious mantras and the sacred fords of Brahma.
नर्मदे सिंधुकावेरि जले ऽस्मिन्सन्निधिं कुरु
O Narmada, Sindhu, Kaveri—make your presence in these waters.
आगच्छन्तु महाभागाः स्नानकाले सदा मम
May the highly fortunate ones always come to me at the time of bathing.
पुरी द्वारावती ज्ञेया सत्पैता मोक्षदायिकाः
Know that the city of Dvaravati is sacred, bestowing liberation upon the righteous.
स्नानाङ्गं तर्पणं कृत्वाचम्यार्ध्यं भानवेर्ऽपयेत्
After performing the bathing rites and the offering to the ancestors, one should offer arghya to the Sun.
परिधायाहतं धौतं द्वितीयं परिवीय च
Having put on a washed, unhemmed garment, and wrapping a second one around oneself,
ईशानाभिमुखो विप्र गायत्र्याचम्य वै द्विज
Facing northeast, O Brahmin, and having sipped water with the Gayatri, O twice-born,
ततस्तु वारिणात्मानं वेष्टयित्वा समुक्ष्य च
Then, after sprinkling and washing oneself thoroughly with water,
भूरादिभिर्व्याहृतिभिः सत्पभिः प्रोक्ष्य मस्तकम्
One should sprinkle the head with pure water, reciting the sacred vyahritis beginning with 'bhur.'
विन्यस्य हृदये तारं भूः शिरस्यथ विन्यसेत्
Placing the syllable 'Om' on the heart, then 'Bhu' on the head,
भूर्भुवः स्वस्तथात्रास्त्रं दिक्षु तालत्रयं न्यसेत्
One should place 'Bhu', 'Bhuvah', and 'Svah', as well as the protective mantra, in the three directions.
आगच्छ वरदे देवि त्र्यक्षरे ब्रह्मवादिनि
Come, O bestower of boons, O goddess, O three-syllabled, O knower of Brahman.
मध्याह्ने वृषभारुढां शुक्लांबरसमावृताम्
At midday, envision her riding a bull, clothed in white garments.
सायं तु गरुडारुढां पीतांबरसमावृत्ताम्
In the evening, envision her riding Garuda, clothed in yellow garments.
तारं च व्याहृतीः सत्प त्रिपदां च समुच्चरन्
Reciting the syllable, the sacred vyahritis, and the three-footed mantra together,
वाममध्यात्परैर्वायुं क्रमेण प्राणसंयमे
From the left, the center, and the right, restrain the breath in sequence through pranayama.
आपः पुनन्तु मध्याह्ने सायमग्निश्चमेति च
Let the waters purify at midday, and fire in the evening, thus it is said.
सुमुत्रिया न इत्युक्त्वा नासास्पृष्टजलेन च
Having said, 'May it not be impure by urine,' and with water that has not touched the nose,
ऋतं च सत्यमेतेन कृत्वा चैवाधमर्षणम्
Having performed the act of purification with this, one should also recite, 'Truth and righteousness.'
