न निन्देद्योगिनो विप्रान्व्रतिनो ऽपि यतींस्तथा
One should not revile yogis, Brahmins, those observing vows, or ascetics.
दर्शे च पौर्णमास्यां च यागं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
On the new moon and full moon, one should perform the prescribed sacrifice.
उपासनपरित्यागी सुरापीत्युच्यते बुधैः
He who abandons worship is declared by the wise to be like a drinker of liquor.
दर्शे च प्रेतपक्षे च श्राद्धं कुर्याद्गृही द्विजः
A householder twice-born should perform śrāddha rites on the new moon and during the fortnight of ancestors.
नावधान्ये समायाते गृही श्राद्धं समाचरेत्
A householder should not perform śrāddha when grain is not available.
पुण्यक्षेत्रेषु तीर्थेषु गृही श्राद्धं समाचरेत्
A householder should perform śrāddha in holy places and at sacred fords.
वृथा भवति तत्सर्वमूर्द्धपुण्ड्रं विना कृतम्
All that is done without the crown-shaped mark is in vain.
वृथाचारः परित्याज्यस्तस्माच्छ्रेयो ऽर्थिभिर्द्विजैः
Fruitless conduct should be abandoned; therefore, seekers of welfare among the twice-born must avoid it.
कार्या द्विजातिभिः सम्यक्सर्वकर्मफलप्रदाः
The twice-born should properly perform those acts which yield the fruits of all deeds.
विष्णौ प्रसन्नतां याते किमसाध्यं द्विजोत्तम
When Viṣṇu is pleased, what is impossible, O best of the twice-born?
यद्रूतां सर्वपापानि नश्यन्त्येव न संशयः
When it is performed, all sins are destroyed without doubt.
वृत्तिं संचिन्तयेद्विप्र कृतकेशप्रसाधनः
A brāhmaṇa, having arranged his hair, should consider his livelihood.
कुर्यान्मूत्रपुरीषे तु रात्रौ चेद्दक्षिणामुखः
He should relieve himself of urine and feces at night facing south.
वहन्काष्टं करेणैकं तावन्मौनी भवेद्द्विजः
While carrying wood in one hand, the twice-born should remain silent.
तथा वृक्षस्य च्छायायां कान्तारे वह्निसन्निधौ
Likewise, in the shade of a tree, in the wilderness, or near fire.
ब्राह्मणानां समीपे च तथा गोगुरुयोषिताम्
Also, near brāhmaṇas, cows, enclosures, or women.
एवमादिषु देशेषु मलमूत्रं न कारयेत्
In such places, one should not pass urine or feces.
शौचाचारविहीनस्य समस्तं कर्म निष्फलम्
For one lacking purity of conduct, all actions are fruitless.
मृज्जलाभ्यां बहिः शुद्धिर्भावशुद्धिस्तथान्तरम्
External purity is achieved with clay and water; internal purity is through disposition.
न मूषकादिखनितां फआलोत्कृष्टां तथैव च
One should not use clay dug up by mice or similar creatures, nor clay that is of superior quality.
शौचं कुर्यात्प्रयत्नेन समादाय शुभां मृदम्
One should carefully perform purification, taking auspicious clay.
एतन्मूत्रमुत्सर्गे शौचमाहूर्मनीषिणः
The wise declare this as purification after urination and defecation.
सत्प तिस्रः प्रदातव्याः पादयोर्मृत्तिकाः पृथक्
Three lumps of clay should be given separately for the feet.
एतच्छौचं गृहस्थस्य द्विगुणं ब्रह्मचारिणाम्
This is the purification for a householder; for a student, it is twice as much.
स्वस्थाने पूर्णशौचं स्यात्पथ्यर्द्धं मुनिसत्तम
In one's own place, complete cleanliness should be maintained, and half that on the path, O best of sages.
गन्धलेपक्षयकरं शौर्चं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः
A discerning person should perform cleansing that removes odors and dirt.
व्रतस्थानां तु सर्वेषां यतिवच्छौचमिष्यते
For all those observing vows, purity like that of ascetics is prescribed.
एवं शौचं तु निर्वर्त्य पश्चाद्वै सुसमाहितः
Having thus performed purification, then, with full concentration,
त्रिश्चतुर्धा पिबेदापो गन्धफेनादिवर्जिताः
One should drink water three or four times, free from smell, foam, and the like.
तर्जन्यङ्गुष्ठयोगेन नासारन्ध्रद्वयं स्पृशेत्
With the thumb and forefinger joined, one should touch both nostrils.
