दैवेनाप्यथवा विप्र केचिदार्षं प्रचक्षते
Some Brahmins declare the Daiva or even the Arsha marriage as well.
अभावेषु तु पूर्वेषां कुर्यादेव परान्बुधः
In the absence of the earlier types, the wise should indeed perform the later ones.
सुवर्णकुण्डले चैव धौतवस्त्रद्वयं तथा
He should wear golden earrings and two clean garments.
धारयेद्वैणवं दण्डं सोदकं च कमण्डलुम्
He should carry a bamboo staff and a water-pot with water.
धारयेत्पुष्पमाल्ये च सुगन्धं प्रियदर्शनः
He should wear a garland of flowers, be fragrant, and pleasing in appearance.
परान्नं नैव भुञ्जीत परवादं च वर्जयेत्
He should not eat food from others nor engage in slander.
न संहताभ्यां हस्ताभ्यां कण्डूयेदात्मनः शिरः
He should not scratch his own head with both hands together.
देवार्चाचमनस्नानव्रतश्राद्धक्रियादिषु
In acts such as worship of the gods, sipping water, bathing, vows, and funeral rites—
नारोहेदुष्ट्रयानं च शुष्कवादं च वर्जयेत्
One should avoid riding on a defective vehicle and engaging in fruitless arguments.
नापसव्यं व्रजेद्विप्र गोश्चत्थानलपर्वतान्
A twice-born should not pass to the left of a cow, a plough, fire, or a mountain.
असूयां मत्सरत्वं च दिवास्वापं च वर्जयेत्
One should avoid envy, jealousy, and sleeping during the day.
स्वकं नाम स्वनक्षत्रं मानं चैवातिगोपयेत्
One should carefully conceal one's own name, birth star, and personal honor.
आसवद्यूतगीतेषु द्विजस्तु न रर्तिं चरेत्
A twice-born should not take pleasure in wine, gambling, or singing.
सर्पं च भषणं स्पृष्ट्वा सचैलं स्नानमाचरेत्
After touching a snake or a corpse, one should bathe with one's clothes on.
स्पृष्ट्वा देवलकं चैव सवासा जलमाविशेत्
After touching a temple, one should enter water still wearing one's garments.
अजामार्जंनिमार्जाररेणुर्द्दैवं शुभं हरेत्
The dust from a goat, a cat, or a donkey is said to destroy good fortune.
वृषलीपतिसङ्गं च दूरतः परिवर्जयेत्
One should completely avoid association with the husband of a low-caste woman.
तथैव नग्नशयनं सर्वदा परिवर्जयेत्
Likewise, one should always avoid sleeping naked.
तांबूलमशुचिं नाद्यात्तथा सुप्तं न बोधयेत्
One should not eat impure betel, nor awaken someone who is sleeping.
न वामहस्तेनैकेन पिबेद्वक्रेण वा जलम्
One should not drink water with only the left hand or with a crooked hand.
न निन्देद्योगिनो विप्रान्व्रतिनो ऽपि यतींस्तथा
One should not revile yogis, Brahmins, those observing vows, or ascetics.
दर्शे च पौर्णमास्यां च यागं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
On the new moon and full moon, one should perform the prescribed sacrifice.
उपासनपरित्यागी सुरापीत्युच्यते बुधैः
He who abandons worship is declared by the wise to be like a drinker of liquor.
दर्शे च प्रेतपक्षे च श्राद्धं कुर्याद्गृही द्विजः
A householder twice-born should perform śrāddha rites on the new moon and during the fortnight of ancestors.
नावधान्ये समायाते गृही श्राद्धं समाचरेत्
A householder should not perform śrāddha when grain is not available.
पुण्यक्षेत्रेषु तीर्थेषु गृही श्राद्धं समाचरेत्
A householder should perform śrāddha in holy places and at sacred fords.
वृथा भवति तत्सर्वमूर्द्धपुण्ड्रं विना कृतम्
All that is done without the crown-shaped mark is in vain.
वृथाचारः परित्याज्यस्तस्माच्छ्रेयो ऽर्थिभिर्द्विजैः
Fruitless conduct should be abandoned; therefore, seekers of welfare among the twice-born must avoid it.
कार्या द्विजातिभिः सम्यक्सर्वकर्मफलप्रदाः
The twice-born should properly perform those acts which yield the fruits of all deeds.
विष्णौ प्रसन्नतां याते किमसाध्यं द्विजोत्तम
When Viṣṇu is pleased, what is impossible, O best of the twice-born?
