श्राद्धं व्रतं तथा दानं देवताभ्यार्चनं तथा
The ancestral rite, vow, gift, and worship of the gods likewise.
कृते ऽभिवादने यस्तु न कुर्या त्प्रतिवादनम्
When a greeting is made, whoever does not return the greeting.
प्रक्षाल्य पादावाचम्य गुरोरभिमुखः सदा
Having washed the feet and mouth, always facing the teacher.
अष्टकासु चतुर्दश्यां प्रतिपत्पर्वणोस्तथा
On the eighth days, the fourteenth, and likewise on the first days of festivals.
भाद्रपदापरपक्षे द्वितीयायां तथैव च
On the second day of the latter half of Bhādrapada, likewise.
परिवेषं गते सूर्ये श्रोत्रिये गृहमागते
When the sun has set, when a learned Brahmin enters the house.
संध्यायां गर्जिते मेघे ह्यकाले परिवर्षणे
At twilight, when thunder resounds, and when rain falls out of season.
मन्वादिषु च देवर्षे युगादिषु चतुर्ष्वपि
At the beginnings of Manus and gods, and at the four beginnings of the ages.
तृतीया प्राधवे शुक्ला भाद्रे कृष्णा त्रघयोदशी
The third day in the bright fortnight, Bhādra, the dark thirteenth, and the bright eleventh.
एता युगाद्याः कथिता दत्तस्याक्षयकारिकाः
These beginnings of the ages are said to bring inexhaustible results for what is given.
अक्षयुक्छुक्लनवमी कार्तिके द्वादशी सिता
The inexhaustible bright ninth in Kārtika, and the twelfth in the bright fortnight.
आषाढशुक्लदशमी सिता माघस्य सत्पमी
The bright tenth in Āṣāḍha, and the seventh in Māgha's bright fortnight.
फआल्गुनस्य त्वमावास्या पौषस्यैकादशी सिता
On the new moon of Phālguna, and on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Pauṣa—
मन्वादयः समाख्याता दत्तस्याक्षयकारिकाः
These are declared by the sages as occasions when gifts yield inexhaustible results.
श्राद्धे निमन्त्रिते चैवग्रहणे चन्द्रसूर्ययोः
At a śrāddha, when invited, and during the eclipses of the moon and sun—
गलग्रहे दुर्द्दिने च नाधीयीत कदाचना
During an eclipse, on an inauspicious day, one should never study at any time.
अधीयतां सुमूढानांप्रजांप्रज्ञांयशः श्रियम्
Let study be undertaken for those who are dull-witted, for offspring, wisdom, fame, and prosperity.
अनध्याये तु यो ऽधीते तं विद्याद्व्रह्मघातकम्
But one who studies during forbidden times should be known as a slayer of Brahmins.
कुण्डगोलकयोः केचिज्जडादीनां च नारद
Some, O Nārada, say that during the conjunction of Kuṇḍa and Golaka, and for the dull and the like, study is not permitted.
अनधीत्य तु यो वेदमन्यत्र कुरुते श्रमम्
But one who, without studying the Veda, exerts himself elsewhere—
अनधीतश्रुतिर्विप्र आचार प्रतिपद्यते
A Brāhmaṇa who, without studying the scriptures, adopts proper conduct—
नित्यं नैमित्तिकं काम्यं यच्चान्यत्कर्म वैदिकम्
All daily, occasional, and desired rites, and whatever other Vedic acts there are—
शब्दब्रह्ममयो विष्णुर्वेदः साक्षाद्धारि स्मृकतः
Vishnu is verily the embodiment of the word and the Veda, directly present, as remembered.
वेदाध्यायी ततो विप्रः सर्वान्कामानवान्पुयात्
Therefore, the Brāhmaṇa who studies the Veda attains all desires and is purified.
अनुज्ञातस्ततस्तेन कुर्यादग्निपरिग्रहम्
Then, having been permitted, he should perform the acceptance of the sacred fire.
अधीत्य गुरवे दत्त्वा दक्षिणां संविशेद्वृहम्
Having studied, and given the teacher his fee, he should enter household life.
द्विजः समुद्वहेत्कन्यां सुशीलां धर्म चारिणीम्
A twice-born should marry a maiden of good character, who follows dharma.
द्विजः समुद्वहेत्कन्यथा गुरुतल्पराः
A twice-born should not marry a girl who has been with his teacher, or with elders.
अतिकेशामकेशामकेशां च वाचालां नोद्वहेद्वुधः
A wise man should not marry a woman who is excessively hairy, bald, or talkative.
न्यानाधिकाङ्गीमुन्मत्तां पिशुनां नोद्वहेद् बुधः
A wise man should not marry one who is deformed, mad, or slanderous.
