प्रातः स्नायी भवेद्वर्णी समित्कुशफलादिकान्
He of the varṇa should bathe in the morning, and gather sacred sticks, kuśa grass, fruits, and the like.
यज्ञोपवीतमजिनं दण्डं च मुनिसत्तम
He should possess the sacred thread, a deerskin, and a staff, O best of sages.
वर्णिनो वर्त्तनं प्राहुर्भिक्षान्नेनैव केवलम्
The livelihood of those of the varṇas is said to be solely by food obtained through alms.
भवत्पूर्वं ब्राह्मणस्य भवन्मध्यं नृपस्य च
Before you, the brāhmaṇa; in your presence, the king.
सांयप्रातर्वह्निकार्यं यथाचारं जितेन्द्रियः
He should perform the morning and evening rituals with self-control, in accordance with proper conduct.
अग्निकार्यपरित्यागी पतितः प्रोच्यते बुधैः
One who abandons the fire rituals is declared fallen by the wise.
देवताभ्यर्च्चनं कुर्याच्छुश्रूषानुपदं गुरोः
He should worship the deities and continuously serve his teacher.
आनीयानिन्द्यविप्राणां गृहाद्भिक्षां जितेन्द्रियः
With self-control, he should bring alms from the houses of blameless brāhmaṇas.
मधुस्त्रीमांसलवणं ताम्बूलं दन्तधावनम्
Honey, wine, meat, salt, betel, and tooth-cleaning sticks—
छात्रघपादुक गन्धांश्च तथा माल्यानुलेपनम्
Umbrella, water pot, sandals, perfumes, as well as garlands and unguents—
परिवादं चोपतापं विप्रलापं तथाञ्जनम्
Slander, distress, idle talk, and also collyrium—
अभिवादनशीलः स्याद् वृद्धेषु च यथाक्रमम्
He should be habituated to respectful salutation, especially towards elders, in due order.
आध्यात्मिका दिदुःखानि निवारयति यो गुरुः
The teacher who removes spiritual sufferings—
असावहमिति ब्रूयाद्दिजो वै ह्यभिवादने
In salutation, the twice-born should say, 'It is I.'
नास्तिकं भिन्नमर्यादं कृतन्घं ग्रामयाजकम्
An atheist, one who has broken boundaries, a sinner, and a village priest.
पाषण्डं पतितं व्रात्यं तथा नक्षघत्रजीविनम्
A heretic, a fallen person, an outcaste, and one who lives by causing harm to stars.
उन्मत्तं च शठं धूर्त्तं धावन्तमशुचिं तथा
One who is mad, deceitful, rogue, running about, and impure.
विवादशीलिनं चञ्जं वमन्तं जलमध्यगम्
One fond of disputes, a gambler, one vomiting, and one who is in water.
भर्तृन्घीं पुष्पिणीं जारां सूतिकां गर्भपातिनीम्
A wife who has wronged her husband, a woman with flowers, an adulteress, a woman in childbirth, and one who has aborted.
सभायां यज्ञशालायां देवतायतनेष्वपि
In the assembly, in the sacrificial hall, and even in temples of the gods.
श्राद्धं व्रतं तथा दानं देवताभ्यार्चनं तथा
The ancestral rite, vow, gift, and worship of the gods likewise.
कृते ऽभिवादने यस्तु न कुर्या त्प्रतिवादनम्
When a greeting is made, whoever does not return the greeting.
प्रक्षाल्य पादावाचम्य गुरोरभिमुखः सदा
Having washed the feet and mouth, always facing the teacher.
अष्टकासु चतुर्दश्यां प्रतिपत्पर्वणोस्तथा
On the eighth days, the fourteenth, and likewise on the first days of festivals.
भाद्रपदापरपक्षे द्वितीयायां तथैव च
On the second day of the latter half of Bhādrapada, likewise.
परिवेषं गते सूर्ये श्रोत्रिये गृहमागते
When the sun has set, when a learned Brahmin enters the house.
संध्यायां गर्जिते मेघे ह्यकाले परिवर्षणे
At twilight, when thunder resounds, and when rain falls out of season.
मन्वादिषु च देवर्षे युगादिषु चतुर्ष्वपि
At the beginnings of Manus and gods, and at the four beginnings of the ages.
तृतीया प्राधवे शुक्ला भाद्रे कृष्णा त्रघयोदशी
The third day in the bright fortnight, Bhādra, the dark thirteenth, and the bright eleventh.
एता युगाद्याः कथिता दत्तस्याक्षयकारिकाः
These beginnings of the ages are said to bring inexhaustible results for what is given.
