नमः स्मृतार्तिनाशाय भूयो भूयो नमो नमः
Salutations again and again to the one who destroys the suffering of those who remember him.
प्रत्यक्षतामगात्तेषां शङ्कचत्रगदाधरः
He, bearing the conch, discus, and mace, became visible to them.
सर्वालङ्कारसंयुक्तं श्रीवत्साङ्कितवक्षसम्
He was adorned with all ornaments, his chest marked with the Śrīvatsa.
स्तृयमानं मुनिवरैः पार्षदप्रवरावृत्तम्
He was praised by the best of sages, surrounded by foremost attendants.
नमश्चक्रुर्मुदा युक्ता अष्टाङ्गौरवनिं गताः
Filled with joy and reverence, they offered salutations with eightfold prostration.
उवाच प्रीणयन्देवान्नतानिन्द्रपुरोगमान्
Pleased, he spoke to the gods, who were bowed down, with Indra at their head.
युष्मान्न बाधते देवाः स ऋषिः सज्जनाग्राणीः
That sage, foremost among the virtuous, does not trouble you, O gods.
सर्वथान्यं न बाधन्ते स्वप्ने ऽपि सुरसत्तमाः
In every way, the best of gods do not trouble another, not even in a dream.
अविधायात्मनो रक्षामन्यान्द्वेष्टि कथं सुधीः
How can a wise person, without first ensuring his own protection, bear enmity toward another?
अन्यं क्रीडयितुं शक्तः कथं भवति सत्तमः
How can one who is noble be able to play with or harm another?
नित्यं कामादिभिर्युक्तो मूढधीः प्रोच्यते तु सः
One who is always engaged in desire and the like is called a deluded mind.
निःशङ्गः प्रोच्यते सद्भिरिहामात्र च सत्तमाः
But the noble ones here are called unattached by the virtuous.
गच्छध्वं स्वालयं स्वस्थाः क्रीडयिष्यति वो न सः
Return to your own abodes in peace; he will not trouble you.
इति दत्वा वरं तेषामतसीकुसुमप्रभः
Thus, the one shining like a jasmine flower granted them a boon.
तुष्टात्मानः सुरगणां ययुर्नाकं यथागतम्
Satisfied in themselves, the hosts of gods returned to heaven as they had come.
अरुपं परमं ब्रह्मस्वप्रकाशं निरञ्जनम्
The formless, supreme Brahman, self-luminous and stainless.
दिव्यायुधधरं दृष्ट्वा मृकण्डुर्विस्मितो ऽभवत्
Seeing him bearing divine weapons, Mṛkaṇḍu was astonished.
प्रसन्नवदनं शान्तं धातारं विश्वतेजसम्
He beheld the Creator, serene, with a gracious face, radiant with universal splendor.
ननाम दण्डवद्भूमौ देवदेव सनातनम्
He bowed down flat on the ground to the eternal Lord of gods.
शिरस्यञ्चलिमाधाय स्तोतुं समुपचक्रमे
Placing his hands upon his head, he began to offer praise.
अपारपाराय परानुकर्त्रे नमः परेभ्यः परपारणाय
Homage to the One beyond both ends, the supreme imitator, to the highest among the supreme, the ultimate deliverer.
बहुस्वरुपो ऽपि निरञ्जनो यस्तमीशमीढ्यं परमं भजामि
Though possessing many forms, he is untouched; I worship that supreme Lord, worthy of praise.
अनूपमं भक्ति जनानुकम्पिनं भजामि सर्वेश्वरमादिमीड्यम्
I worship the incomparable, the source of devotion, the compassionate to his devotees, the Lord of all, the original object of praise.
निवृत्तमोहाः परमं पवित्रं नतो ऽस्मि संसारनिर्वर्त्तकं तम्
Freed from delusion, I bow to that supremely pure one, the remover of worldly existence.
जगत्सेव्यं जगाद्धाम परेशं करुणाकरम्
The one served by the world, the abode of the universe, the supreme Lord, the ocean of compassion.
अवाप परमां तुष्टिं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः
The bearer of conch, discus, and mace attained supreme satisfaction.
उवाच परमं प्रीत्या वरं बरय सुव्रत
He spoke with utmost affection: 'Choose a boon, O steadfast one.'
मनसा यदभिप्रेतं वरं वरय सुव्रत
'Choose the boon that your mind desires, O steadfast one.'
त्वद्दर्शनमपुण्यानां दुर्लभं च यतः स्मृतम्
'Because the vision of you is rare even for the unworthy, it is remembered.'
धर्मिष्टा दीक्षिताश्वापि वीतरागा विमत्सराः
'Even those who are righteous, initiated, free from passion and envy—'
