धममागप्रवक्तारो मुक्ता एव न सशंयः
Those who expound this dharma are indeed liberated, without doubt.
मासोपवासः कर्त्तव्यो वनस्थैश्च विशेषतः
A month-long fast should especially be observed by those dwelling in the forest.
कृत्वा मोक्षमवान्पोति योगिनामपि दुर्लभम्
Having performed it, one attains liberation, which is difficult even for yogis to obtain.
मूर्खो वा पण्डितो वापि श्रुत्वैतन्मोक्षभाग्भवेत्
Whether foolish or learned, upon hearing this, one becomes eligible for liberation.
शृणुयाद्वाचयेद्वापि सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever listens to or recites this is freed from all sins.
सर्वपापप्रशमनं सर्वकामफलप्रदम्
It removes all sins and grants the fruits of all desires.
मोक्षदं कुर्वतां भक्त्या विष्णोः प्रियतरं द्विज
For those who perform it with devotion, it bestows liberation and is most dear to Viṣṇu, O twice-born one.
कर्त्तव्यं सर्वथा विप्रविष्णुप्रीतिकरं यतः
It must always be performed, for it brings delight to both the brāhmaṇas and Viṣṇu.
यो भुङ्क्ते सो ऽत्र पापीयान्परत्र नरकं व्रजेत्
Whoever partakes here is more sinful and will go to hell in the next world.
पूर्वापरदिने गत्रावहोरात्रं तु मध्यमे
On the previous and following days, one may eat, but not during the middle day and night.
स भोक्तुं सर्वलपापानि स्पृहयालुर्नसंशयः
He who desires to eat on that day certainly longs for all sins, without doubt.
एकादश्यां निराहारो यदि मुक्तिमभीप्सति
On Ekādaśī, if one seeks liberation, one should fast completely.
एकादश्यां निराहारो यदि मुक्तिमभीप्सति एकादश्यां निराहारो यदि मुक्तिमभीप्सति
If one desires liberation, one should fast on the eleventh day; if one desires liberation, one should fast on the eleventh day.
अन्नमाश्रित्य तिष्टन्ति तानि विप्र हरेर्दिने एकादश्यां तु यो भुङ्क्ते तस्य नैवास्ति निष्कृतिः
O Brahmin, those beings remain sustained by food on the day of Hari; but whoever eats on the eleventh day has no expiation.
एकादश्यां निराहारः स्थित्वा याति परां गतिम्
By fasting on the eleventh day, one attains the supreme path.
संसेव्या सर्वथा विप्रैः संसारच्छे दलिप्सुभिः
It should always be observed by Brahmins who wish to cut off worldly existence.
स्नापयेद्विधिवद्विष्णुं पूजयेत्प्रयतेन्द्रियः
One should bathe and worship Vishnu according to the proper method, with controlled senses.
शयीत सन्निधौ विष्णोर्नारायणपरायणः
One devoted to Narayana should lie down in the presence of Vishnu.
गन्धपुष्पादिभिः सम्यक् ततस्त्वे वसुदीरयेत्
Then, with fragrance, flowers, and the like, one should properly offer them.
भोक्ष्यामि पुण्डरीकाक्ष शरणं मे भवाच्युत
O Lotus-eyed One, I will eat; O Achyuta, be my refuge.
भक्तिभावेन तुष्टात्मा उपवासं समर्पयेत्
With a mind satisfied by devotion, one should dedicate the fast.
गीतैर्वाद्यैशअच नृत्यैश्च पुराणश्रवणादिभिः
With songs, instruments, dances, and listening to the Purāṇas and similar acts.
स्नात्वा च विधिवद्विष्णुं पूजयत्प्रयतेन्द्रियः
Having bathed according to the proper method, one should worship Vishnu with controlled senses.
द्वादश्यां पयसा विप्र हरिसारुपप्यमषश्नुते
On the twelfth day, O Brahmin, one attains similarity to Hari by consuming milk.
प्रसीद सुमुखो भूत्वा ज्ञानदृष्टिप्रदो भव
Be gracious, with a pleasant face; grant the vision of knowledge.
ब्रह्मणान्भोजयेच्छक्त्या दद्याद्वै दक्षिणां तथा
One should feed Brahmins according to one's capacity, and likewise give them gifts.
कृतपञ्चमहायज्ञः स्वयं भुञ्जीत वाग्यतः
Having performed the five great sacrifices, one should eat oneself, with restrained speech.
स याति विष्णुभवनं पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभम्
He goes to the abode of Vishnu, where return is difficult.
चाण्डालान्पतकितांश्चैव नेक्षेदपि कदाचन
One should never even look upon outcastes and sinners.
उपवास व्रतपरो नालपेच्च कदाचन
One devoted to fasting and vows should never engage in conversation.
