अथवा तुलसूसेवा शिवलिङ्गप्रपूजनम्
Alternatively, service to the tulasī plant or worship of the liṅga of Śiva—
सर्वपाप हरं कर्म ध्वजागोपणसंज्ञितम्
The act called raising the flag destroys all sins.
तानि सर्वाणि वक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व गदतो मम
I will now describe all those acts—listen as I speak.
स्नानं कुर्यात्प्रयत्नेन दन्तधावनपूर्वकम्
One should bathe carefully, first brushing the teeth.
धौताम्बरधरः शुद्धो विप्रो नारायणाग्रतः
Wearing clean, washed garments, purified, the brāhmaṇa should stand before Nārāyaṇa.
नित्यकर्माणि निर्वर्त्य पश्चाद्विष्णुं समर्चयेत्
Having performed the daily rites, he should then worship Viṣṇu.
नान्दीश्राद्धं प्रकुर्वीत ध्वजारोपणकर्मणि
One should not perform the nāndīśrāddha during the flag-raising ceremony.
सूर्यं च वैनतेयं च हिमांशुं तत्परोर्ऽचयेत्
He should worship the Sun, Garuḍa, and the Moon thereafter.
हरिद्राक्षघतगन्धाद्यैः शुक्लपुष्पैर्विशेषतः
Especially with turmeric, grapes, unguents, and white flowers.
आधायान्गिं स्वगृह्योत्त्या ह्याज्यभागादिकं क्रमात्
Having placed the vessel at home, he should arrange the ghee portions and the like in order.
प्रथमं पौरुषं सूक्तं विष्णोर्नुकमिरावतीम्
First, he should recite the Puruṣa Sūkta, the hymns to Viṣṇu, and the Īrāvatī.
सोमो धेनुमुदुत्यं च जुहुयाच्च ततो द्विज
Then, the brāhmaṇa should offer Soma, the cow, and the dawn.
रात्रघौ जागरणं कुर्यादुपकण्ठं हरेः शुचुः
During the night, one should keep vigil near the pure presence of Hari.
गन्धपुष्पादिभिर्देवमर्चयेत्पूर्ववत्क्रमात्
With fragrances, flowers, and the like, one should worship the deity as before, in due order.
नृत्यैश्च रतोत्रघपठनैर्नयेद्विष्णवालये ध्वजम्
With dances, songs, and recitations, one should spend time in the temple of Vishnu, beneath the banner.
सुस्थुरः स्थापयेद्विप्र ध्वजं सस्तम्भसंयुतम्
O Brahmin, let the banner, firmly set and joined with a staff, be established.
भक्षघ्यभोज्यादिसंयुक्तैर्नैवेद्यैश्च हरिं यजेत्
One should worship Hari with offerings that include foods to be eaten, chewed, and the like.
प्रदक्षघिणमनुव्रज्य स्तोत्रघमेतदुदूरयेत्
After circumambulating, one should recite this hymn.
नमस्ते ऽस्तु हृषीकेश महापुरुष पूर्वज
Salutations to you, Hrishikesha, Great Person, Ancient One.
लयमेष्यति यत्रैवं तं प्रपन्नो ऽस्मि केशवम्
I take refuge in Keshava, in whom dissolution itself occurs.
योगिनोयं न पश्यन्ति तं वन्दं ज्ञानरुपुणम्
The yogis do not see him; I bow to him, whose form is knowledge.
पादो ऽभूद्यस्य पृथिवी तं वन्दे विश्वरुपिणम्
The earth became his foot; I bow to him, who has the form of the universe.
ऋक्सामयजुपी येन तं वन्दे ब्रह्ररुपिणम्
By whom the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas exist—I bow to him, who is of the form of Brahman.
वैश्या यस्यो रुतो जाताः पद्भघ्यां शूद्रो व्यजायत
From whose thighs the Vaiśyas were born, and from whose feet the Śūdra arose.
स्वभावविमलं शुद्धं निर्विकारं निरञ्जनम्
Whose nature is pure, spotless, changeless, and stainless.
सद्भक्तवत्सलं विष्णुं भक्तिगम्यं नमाम्यहम्
I bow to Vishnu, who is dear to true devotees, attainable through devotion.
सूक्ष्मासूक्ष्याणि येनासंस्तं वन्दे सर्वतोमुखम्
By whom the subtle and the gross exist—I bow to him, who faces all directions.
निर्गुणं परमं सूक्ष्मं प्रणतो ऽस्ति पुनः पुनः
To the qualityless, supreme, and subtle one, I bow again and again.
यमामनन्ति योगान्द्राः सर्वकारणकारणम्
Whom the lords of yoga proclaim as the cause of all causes.
निर्गुणः परमात्मा च स मे विष्णुः प्रसीदतु
May that Vishnu, who is the qualityless Supreme Self, be gracious to me.
