प्रतिमां दक्षिणायुक्तामाचार्याय निवेदयेत्
One should offer the image, together with the prescribed gift, to the teacher.
भुञ्जीत वाग्यतः पश्चात्स्वयं बेवृजनैर्वृतः
Afterwards, maintaining control of speech, he should eat, surrounded by pure people.
इत्येवं कुरुते यस्तु मनुजो द्वादशीव्रतम्
Whoever, in this way, observes the Dvadashi vow as a human being—
तपाति विष्णुभवनं यत्र यत्त्वा न शोचति
He attains the abode of Vishnu, where he never grieves again.
वाचयेद्वापि स नरो वाजपेयफलं लभेत्
Or even if he recites it, that person obtains the fruit of a Vajapeya sacrifice.
सर्वपापहरं पुण्यं सर्वदुःखनिबर्हणम्
It destroys all sins, is meritorious, and removes all suffering.
समस्तकामफलदं सर्वव्रतम्यफलप्रदम्
It grants the fruits of all desires and bestows the results of all vows.
येन चीर्णेन पापानां राशिकोटिःर प्रशाम्यति
By performing it, even heaps and millions of sins are pacified.
स्नानं कुर्याद्यथाचारं दन्तधावनपूर्वकम्
One should bathe properly, after cleaning the teeth as prescribed.
प्रक्षाल्य पादावाचम्य स्मरत्रारायणं प्रभुम्
Having washed the feet and rinsed the mouth, one should remember Lord Narayana.
लक्ष्मी नारायणं देवमर्चयेद्भक्तिभावतः
With devotion, one should worship the goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayana.
नमो नारायणायेति पूजयेद्भक्तितत्परः
With the words 'Obeisance to Narayana,' one should worship, intent on devotion.
स्तोत्रैर्वाराधयेद्देवं व्रतकृत्सुसमाहितः
With hymns, the devotee who observes the vow should worship the Lord with full concentration.
चरणा च तिलैश्वापि घृतेन जुहुयात्तथा
He should also offer sesame seeds and ghee into the fire.
होमं कुर्यात्प्रयत्नेन सर्वपापनिवृत्तये
He should carefully perform the homa for the removal of all sins.
समाप्य होमं विधिवच्छान्तिसूक्तं जपेद्रुधः
Having properly completed the homa, he should recite the Shanti Sukta with devotion.
तथोपवासं देवाय ह्यर्पयेद्भक्तिसंयुतः
In the same way, one should offer the fast to the deity, filled with devotion.
भोक्ष्यामि पुण्डरीकाक्ष परे ऽह्लि शरणं भव
I shall partake, O Lotus-eyed One; O Supreme Lord, be my refuge.
जानुभ्यामवनीं गगत्वा शुक्लपुष्पाक्षतान्वितः
Having approached the ground on the knees, adorned with white flowers and unbroken rice,
एवमर्घ्यं प्रदायेन्दोः प्रार्थयेत्प्राञ्जलिस्ततः
Thus, after offering the arghya to the moon, one should pray with joined palms.
तिष्टन्पूर्वमुखो भूत्वा पश्यन्निन्दुं च नारद
Standing facing east, gazing at the moon, O Narada,
रोहिणीपतये तुभ्यं लक्ष्मीभ्रात्रे नमो ऽस्तु ते
To you, Lord of Rohini, brother of Lakshmi, I offer my salutations.
जितेन्द्रियश्च संशुद्धः पाषण्डालोकवर्जितः
With controlled senses, purified, and avoiding the company of heretics,
पुनः संपूजयेद्देवं यथाविभवविस्तरम्
He should again worship the deity, according to his means and capacity.
बन्धुभृत्यादिभिः सार्धं स्वयं भुञ्जीत वाग्यतः
Together with relatives, servants, and others, he should eat, observing restraint in speech.
अर्चयेद्भक्तिसंयुक्तो नारायणमनायमम्
He should worship Narayana, the faultless one, with devotion.
उद्यापनं प्रकुर्वीत तद्विधानं वदामि ते
He should perform the concluding ritual; I will tell you its procedure.
शोभितं पुष्पमालाभिर्वितानध्वजराजितम्
Adorned with garlands of flowers, decorated with canopies and banners,
दर्पंणैश्चामरैश्चैव कलशैश्च समावृतम्
Surrounded by mirrors, fans, and water pots,
जलपूर्णं ततः कुम्भं न्यसेत्तस्योपरि द्विज
Then, O twice-born, he should place a pot filled with water above it.
