In a celestial palace shining like ten million suns, within the city of Viṣṇu,
He remains there for a period measured by the number of dust particles on earth and drops in the ocean.
O Goddess, in the inexhaustible realm, one who donates gold for sixteen months—
By giving food, one attains Viṣṇu's world; by giving sesame, the realm of Śiva.
By gifting golden garments, one attains the Gandharva world; by giving a maiden, fame.
If a man, on the riverbank, establishes a grove adorned with various trees—
With banana, coconut, wood-apple, ashoka, and campaka trees,
With mango, palmyra, citron, and other kinds of trees as well,
And has such a dwelling constructed, resplendent with flowers,
And offers it with devotion, having considered all its purposes,
As many as are the flowers, roots, and fruits of those trees,
For that many thousands of aeons, his stay endures in those worlds.
That supreme glory of the earth, which I have heard from your lotus mouth,
Of which such merit is declared from merely seeing and so forth,
Therefore, O foremost of twice-born, tell me more, for I am always your devotee.
The knower of the essence of the Vedas and Āgamas, smiling, spoke thus:
The procedure for the cow made of jaggery, as proclaimed in the scriptures,
On a spot smeared with cow dung, carefully spreading kuśa grass,
The best molasses-cow is said to be of four loads.
The calf is considered half a load, and the youngest, just a small weight.
The master of the first type should conduct himself according to the secondary rule.
These two, cow and calf for ghee, should be covered with white, smooth garments.
With white-threaded heads and white woolen blankets.
Adorned with coral necklaces, both having udders full of fresh butter.
With golden horn-ornaments and pure silver hooves, both of them.
Having arranged them in this way, one should then worship with incense and lamps.
May that goddess in the form of a cow grant me peace.
May that goddess in the form of a cow remove my sin.
She who is the power of the moon, sun, and Indra—may she in cow form bring me prosperity.
She who is Lakshmi for the guardians of the worlds—may that wish-granting cow be mine.
