देशकालादि विज्ञाय स्वयमस्याविरोधतः
Having understood the place, time, and other circumstances, and seeing that there is no contradiction in it himself,
सर्वेषामेव जन्तूनामक्लेषजननं हि तत्
for all beings, indeed, that is the cause of no suffering.
कर्मकार्यसहायत्वमकार्यपरिपन्थिता
It assists in the performance of duty and opposes what ought not to be done.
इच्छानुवृत्तकथनं धर्माधर्मविवेकिनः
The discerning one between righteousness and unrighteousness speaks according to the wishes (of others).
ये लोके द्वेषिणो मूर्खाः कुमार्गरतबुद्धयः
Those in the world who are hostile, foolish, and whose minds delight in wrong paths,
धर्माधर्मविवेकेन वेदमार्गानुसारिणः
by discernment of righteousness and unrighteousness, follow the path of the Veda.
हरि भक्तिकरं यत्तत्सद्भिश्च परिरञ्चितम्
That which produces devotion to Hari and is cherished by the virtuous,
सर्वं जगदिदं विष्णुर्वष्णुः सर्वस्य कारणम्
All this world is Viṣṇu; Viṣṇu is the cause of everything.
सर्वदेवमयो विष्णुर्विधिना पूजयामि तम्
Viṣṇu is the embodiment of all the gods; I worship him with proper rites.
सर्वभूतमयो विष्णुः परिपूर्णः सनातनः
Viṣṇu, who is the essence of all beings, is complete and eternal.
समता शत्रुमित्रेषु वशित्वं च तथा नृप
Equanimity towards friend and foe, and self-control as well, O king,
एते सर्वे समाख्यातास्तपः सिद्धिप्रदा नृणाम्
All these have been described; they grant the attainment of austerity to men.
अष्टाक्षरं महामन्त्रं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
The eight-syllabled great mantra destroys all sins.
विष्णोः प्रियकरं चैव सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायकम्
It brings delight to Viṣṇu and bestows all accomplishments.
नमो भगवते प्रोच्य वासुदेवाय तत्परम्
By uttering 'Salutations to the Blessed One, to Vāsudeva,' that is supreme.
द्वयोः समं फलं राजन्नष्टद्वादशवर्णयोः
O king, the result is the same for both, even if the twelve syllables are lost.
शङ्खचचक्रधरं शान्तं नारायणमनामयम्
He who bears the conch and discus, who is peaceful, Nārāyaṇa, free from affliction,
किरीटकुण्डलधरं नानामण्डनशोभितम्
He who wears a crown and earrings, adorned with various ornaments,
पीताम्बरधरं देवं सुरासुरनमस्कृतम्
The god who wears yellow garments, honored by gods and demons alike.
अन्तर्यामी ज्ञानरुपी परिपूर्णः सनातनः
The indwelling lord, embodiment of knowledge, perfect and eternal.
स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु तपः सिद्धिं गच्छ लब्धुं यथासुखम्
May there be well-being for you; attain success in your austerity and happiness as you wish.
परमां प्रीतिमापन्नः प्रपेदेतपसे वनम्
Having attained supreme delight, he entered the forest for austerity.
नादेश्वरे महाक्षेत्रे तपस्तेपे ऽतिदुश्चरम्
In the great sacred place called Nadeshvara, he performed exceedingly difficult austerity.
कृतातिथ्यर्हणश्चापि नित्यं होमपरायणः
He always honored guests and was ever devoted to the sacred fire offering.
पत्रैः पुष्पैः फलैस्तोयैस्त्रिकालं हरिपूजकः
With leaves, flowers, fruits, and water, he worshipped Hari three times a day.
ध्यायन्नारायणं देवं शीर्णपर्णाशनो ऽभवत्
Meditating on the god Narayana, he subsisted on fallen leaves.
निरुच्छ्वास स्तपस्तप्तुं ततः समुपचक्रमे
Then he began to perform austerity without even breathing.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्ताणि निरुच्छ्वासपरो ऽभवत्
For sixty thousand years, he remained intent on holding his breath.
तं दृष्ट्वा देवताः सर्वे वित्रस्ता वह्निता पिताः
Seeing him, all the gods, along with Agni and the ancestors, were terrified.
अस्तुवन्देवदेवेशं शरणागतपालकम्
They praised and bowed to the Lord of gods, the protector of those who seek refuge.
