जन्मप्रभृति पापं वै संचितं हि विनश्यति
From birth, all accumulated sin is destroyed thereby.
कृष्णाष्टम्यां विशेषेण वैधृतिर्जाह्नवीजले
Especially on Krishna Ashtami, bathing in the waters of the Jahnavi during Vaidhriti is praised.
अरुणोदयके स्नायी स तु जातिस्मरो भवेत्
One who bathes at the time of sunrise becomes one who remembers his past births.
संक्रान्त्यां पक्षयोरन्ते ग्रहणे चन्द्रसूर्ययोः
At the time of Sankranti, at the end of the fortnight, and during the eclipses of the moon and sun—
इन्दोर्लक्षगुणं प्रोक्तं रवेर्दशगुणं ततः
The merit for the moon is said to be a hundred thousand times, and for the sun, ten times that.
गङ्गायां यदि लभ्येत सूर्यग्रहशतैः समा
If one attains the Ganga during a solar eclipse, it is equal to a hundred such eclipses.
पापान्यस्यां हरति हि तिथौ सा दशैषाद्यगङ्गा पुण्यं दद्यादपि शतगुणं वाजिमेधक्रतोश्च
On that tithi, the Ganga removes sins and bestows merit a hundred times greater than the Ashvamedha sacrifice.
गोविन्दद्वादशीं प्राप्य तानि मे हन जाह्नवि
O Jahnavi, having attained Govinda Dvadashi, destroy those (sins) for me.
गुरुणा याति संयोगं तन्महत्वं तिथेः स्मृतम्
When it coincides with the Guru (Jupiter), that is remembered as the greatness of the tithi.
अथ देशविशेषेण स्नानस्य फलमुच्यते
Now, the fruit of bathing is described according to the special place.
कुरुक्षेत्राच्छतगुणा यत्र विन्ध्येन संयुता
There, where the Ganga joins with the Vindhya, she is a hundred times more meritorious than at Kurukshetra.
सर्वत्र दुर्लभा गङ्गा त्रिषु स्थानेषु चाधिका
The Ganga, rare everywhere, is especially superior in these three places.
एषु स्नाता दिवं यान्ति ये मृतास्ते ऽपुनर्भवाः
Those who bathe here ascend to heaven; those who die here do not return to rebirth.
सप्तानां राजसूयानां फलं स्यादश्वमेधयोः
One attains the fruit of seven Rājasūya sacrifices and ten Aśvamedha sacrifices.
दशायुतानां तु गवां दानपुण्यं विदुर्बुधाः
The wise know that the merit of giving ten thousand cows is gained.
स्नात्वा वाप्येषु गङ्गायां पुण्यमक्षयमाप्नुयात्
By bathing in the pools of the Ganga, one obtains inexhaustible merit.
यस्मिन्नाविरभूत्पूर्वं वाराहाकृतिरच्युतः
In that place where, in former times, Acyuta appeared in the form of a boar,
अग्निष्टोमसहस्रस्य फलमाप्नोति मानवः
A person attains the fruit of a thousand Agniṣṭoma sacrifices.
अश्वमेधत्रयस्यापि स्नातः पुण्यं लभेन्नरः
By bathing there, a man obtains the merit of three Aśvamedha sacrifices.
नश्यन्ति सर्वजन्मोत्थं पातकं चापि मोहिनि
All sins arising from every birth are destroyed there, O Mohinī.
कपिलाष्टायुतस्यापि दानतुल्यफलं लभेत्
One obtains the equivalent fruit of donating eighty thousand tawny cows.
तीर्थे कनखले स्नात्वा धूतपापो व्रजेद्दिवम्
By bathing at the Kanakhala ford, one purified of sin goes to heaven.
द्वयोर्विश्वजितोस्तत्र स्नानात्पुण्यं लभेन्नरः
There, by bathing at the two Viśvajit fords, a man obtains merit.
सुपुण्यया महापुण्या स्वसा स्वस्रेव संगता
Highly meritorious, supremely holy, sister joined with sister there.
वामपादोद्भवा वापि सरयूर्मानसप्रसूः
Whether born from the left foot or produced from the mind, the Sarayu is so.
पञ्चाश्वमेधफलदं स्नानं तत्र प्रकीर्तितम्
Bathing there is said to yield the fruit of fifty Aśvamedha sacrifices.
गोसहस्रस्य दानं च तत्र स्नानं समं द्वयम्
Giving a thousand cows and bathing there are considered equal in merit.
सोमतीर्थं ततः पुण्यं यत्रासौ नकुलो मुनिः
After that is the holy Soma ford, where the sage Nakula is found.
चंपकाख्यं पुण्यतीर्थं यद्गङ्गोत्तरवाहिनी
There is the sacred tirtha called Campaka, where the Ganges flows northward.
कलशाख्यं ततस्तीर्थं कलशादुत्थितो मुनिः
Then comes the tirtha named Kalasha, where the sage arose from the vessel.
