एवं विमृश्य क्षिप्तिपालदे वान्प्रणम्य हृष्टा च पुरोधसं स्वम्
Thus reflecting, she bowed to Kṣiptipāla and, delighted, also to her own priest.
कृच्छ्रान्तरूपा च दिनं च भुङ्क्ते प्रकृष्टरूपा नरकाय नॄणाम्
Assuming a form of hardship, she spends the day, but in an excellent form she becomes the cause of hell for men.
विभोदितो रुक्मविभूषणस्य मत्तेभसंस्थः पटहः सुघैषः
The drum, adorned with golden ornaments and placed upon a rutting elephant, was sounded with a pleasing tone as instructed.
दृष्टे कार्ये जनः सर्वः प्रत्ययं कुरुते त्विति
When the task is seen, all the people place their trust in it.
अस्पृष्टमुदयं नॄणां मोहनाय भविष्यति
An unmanifest rise among men will become a cause of delusion.
सत्यं हि ते नाम विशालनेत्रे यन्मोहिनीत्येव जनो ब्रवीति
Indeed, O wide-eyed one, your name is truly fitting, for people call you Mohinī.
इत्येव मुक्त्वा तनयो विवस्वतः प्रणम्य तां ब्रह्मसुतां प्रहृष्टः
Having thus spoken, the son of Vivasvat, delighted, bowed to that daughter of Brahmā.
गतेषु देवेषु विमोहिनी सा ब्रह्माणमासाद्य सुरासुरेशम्
When the gods had departed, that Mohinī approached Brahmā, the lord of gods and demons.
दग्धं शरीरं मम लोकनाथ पुनः प्रपत्स्ये ऽथ तथा कुरुष्व
O lord of the worlds, my body has been burned; grant that I may obtain it again—do so accordingly.
जितो हि राज्ञा शमनः पुराद्य कृतो जयी तात तव प्रभावात्
Today, the city has been subdued by the king, and the pacifier has been made victorious, O father, by your power.
भूयामहं जगन्नाथ ब्रह्मणं सांत्ययस्व भोः
O lord of the universe, may I become again; appease Brahmā, O sir.
ब्राह्मणं सांत्वयामास पुनरेव सुताकृते
He again sought to console Brahmā, for the sake of his daughter.
तव चास्या महाभाग सर्वलोकहिताय च
And for your sake, O highly fortunate one, and for the welfare of all worlds.
पुनः शरीरं याचेत तदाज्ञां देहि मानद
Let her request a body again; grant that permission, O giver of honor.
त्वया मया च सपाल्या कृतकार्या तपस्विनी
By you and by me, she, who is to be protected, has accomplished her task through austerity.
तातो ऽहमस्या भूयो ऽपि देहमुत्पादयाम्यहम्
O father, I will again produce a body for her.
यथा शुद्ध्येति विप्रेन्द्र तथैवाशु विधीयताम्
O foremost of Brahmins, let the purification be performed promptly as prescribed.
याज्याया देहयोगार्थमादिदेश मुदान्वितः
He joyfully instructed the sacrificial rite for the purpose of bodily union.
कमण्डलुजलेनौक्षन्मोहिन्या देहभस्म तत्
With water from the water-pot, he sprinkled the ashes of Mohinī’s body.
प्रणम्य तातं च वसोः पुरोधसो जग्राह पादौ विनयेन नत्वा
After bowing to his father, he respectfully took the feet of the priest and saluted him.
विमोहिनीं स्वामिसुतोञ्ज्झितां च जगाद वाक्यं विदुतामवीराम्
He spoke words of wisdom to Mohinī, who was abandoned by her master’s son.
गतिं ते कारयिष्यामि तीर्थस्नानादिकर्मणा
I will arrange your liberation through the rites of bathing in holy waters and other acts.
विससर्ज नमस्कृत्य मोहिनीपितरं मुदा
After respectfully saluting Mohinī’s father, he departed with joy.
जगाम लोकं तमसः परमव्यक्तवर्त्मना
He went to that world beyond darkness, along the path of the unmanifest.
मोहिनीं समनुग्राह्यां मत्वा हृदि विचारयन्
Reflecting in his heart that Mohinī was worthy of being uplifted,
मुहूर्त्तं ध्यानमापन्नो बुबुधे कारणं गतेः
Entering meditation for a moment, he understood the cause of her journey.
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सर्वलोकहिते रतः
Engaged in the welfare of all beings, he spoke with gentle words.
येन विज्ञातमात्रेण पापिनां गतिरुत्तमा
By merely knowing this, even sinners attain the highest state.
न तस्या सदृशं किञ्चिद्विद्यते पापनाशनम्
There is nothing equal to it in destroying sin.
प्रणता मोहिनी प्राह गङ्गास्नानकृतादरा
Mohinī, having bowed and performed the Ganges bath with reverence, spoke.
