ऋक्षेण संयुतायास्तु ज्येष्ठकुण्डाप्लवेन वा
Or by bathing in the Jyeṣṭha pool during the constellation of Ṛkṣa.
व्याहृते कथितं विप्रैः सेयमद्य सुनिष्ठुरा
The utterance has been declared by the Brahmins; today, this is very harsh.
भर्तुर्वाक्यं व्यपोह्यैव घातयित्वा सुतं प्रियम्
Having disregarded her husband's command and killed her beloved son—
विष्णुधर्मप्रलोप्त्रीयं बहुपापसमन्विता
She is a violator of Viṣṇu's law, possessed of many sins.
भवन्तो न्याययुक्तेषु धर्मयुक्तेषु तत्पराः
You, Sirs, are devoted to what is just and righteous.
धर्माधाराः स्मृता देवा धर्मो वेदेसमास्थितः
The gods are said to be the upholders of dharma; dharma abides in the Vedas.
यद्ब्रवीति पतिः किञ्चित्तत्कार्यमाविशङ्कया
Whatever the husband commands, that should be done without hesitation.
शुश्रूषा सा हि विज्ञेया न शुश्रूषा हि सेवनम्
That is to be understood as service; for service is not mere attendance.
सत्यस्य साधनार्थाय शपथैर्यन्त्रितो नृपः
The king, constrained by oaths for the sake of truthfulness,
तेन मोक्षं गतो राजा पापमस्यां विसृज्य च
By that, the king attained release, having abandoned sin in this matter.
सेयं पापशरीरा हि हत्यायुतसमन्विता
Indeed, this woman, possessed of a sinful body, was burdened with countless acts of killing.
प्रजारञ्जनशीलं च हरिवासरसेविनम्
He was devoted to pleasing his subjects and observant of the sacred day of Hari.
परार्थत्यक्तकामं च सदा मखनिषेविणम्
He always renounced personal desires for the sake of others and was ever devoted to sacrifices.
व्यसनैः सप्तभिर्घोरैरनाक्रान्तं महीपतिम्
The king was not afflicted by the seven terrible calamities.
यो ऽस्याः पक्षेतु वर्तेत देवो वा दानवो ऽपि वा
Whoever, whether god or even demon, would take her side,
मोहिन्या रक्षणे यस्तु प्रयत्नं कुरुते सुराः
Whoever among the gods strives to protect this deluder,
तस्य तज्जायते पापं यन्मोहिन्यां व्यवस्थितम्
That one incurs the same sin as is established in this deluder.
क्रोधेन संवीक्ष्य विधिप्रसूतां चिक्षेप तन्मूर्घ्न्यनलप्रकाशम्
Gazing angrily at her, who was born of fate, he cast her down upon her head, blazing like fire.
संपश्यतां नाकनिवासिनां तु तृण्या यथा वह्निशिखावलीढा
Before the eyes of the dwellers of heaven, she was consumed by the flames, just as grass is devoured by a tongue of fire.
तावत्स वह्निर्द्विजवाक्यमृष्टो भस्मावशेषां प्रमदां चकार
Then that fire, sanctified by the words of the twice-born, reduced the woman to nothing but ashes.
भर्त्सिता देवदूतेन स्थितिस्ते ऽत्र न पापिनी
Rebuked by the divine messenger, your place here is not among the sinful.
हरिवासरलोपिन्यां वासस्ते न त्रिविष्टपे
For one who neglects the sacred day of Hari, there is no dwelling in heaven.
एवमुक्त्वा तु तां वायुः क्रूरं वचनपद्भुतम्
Having spoken thus, the wind uttered these harsh and wondrous words to her.
एवं संताडिता राजन् देवदूतेन मोहिनी
Thus, O King, Mohinī was struck by the divine messenger.
तत्र धर्माज्ञया सा तु दूतैः संताडिता चिरम्
There, by the command of Dharma, she was long tormented by the messengers.
पापे धर्माङ्गदः पुत्रो घातितः पतिपाणिना
In sin, Dharmāṅgada, her son, was slain by the hand of her husband.
प्रजाहितं स्थिरप्रज्ञं महेन्द्रवरुणोपमम्
Steadfast in wisdom and devoted to the welfare of his people, he was comparable to Indra and Varuṇa.
प्राकृतस्यापि पुत्रस्य हिंसायां ब्रह्महा भवेत्
Indeed, even in the case of an ordinary son, killing him is considered equivalent to the murder of a Brahmin.
एवं निर्भत्सिता दूतैर्यमस्य नृपसत्तम
Thus, O best of kings, she was harshly rebuked by Yama’s messengers.
ब्रह्मदण्डहतायास्तु देहस्पर्शेन यातनाः
Because her body had been struck by the staff of Brahmā, she suffered torments.
