तस्मिंल् लयम् अनुप्राप्ते किं नु मे जीविते फलम्
When he has merged into that, what fruit remains for me in life?
स्वामिनं तु परित्यज्य प्रयाति नरकं ध्रुवम्
But one who abandons the master surely goes to hell.
भृत्या वेतनभोक्तारो जायन्ते भूतले हयाः
Servants who take their wages are born on earth as horses.
कथं वरं तु गृह्णामि भवतां नाकवासिनाम्
How, then, can I accept a boon from you, dwellers of heaven?
अनृणास्तु भविष्यामः कृत्वा चोपकृतिं तव
Let us be free of debt, having rendered service to you.
तस्य त्वं फलभाग्देवि तादृशार्थे कृतस्य तु
O goddess, you alone share in the fruit of such an act that has been done.
नृपतेराजगामाथ पुरोधाः पावकप्रभः
Then the royal priest, shining like fire, came to the king.
द्वादशाब्दे ततः पूर्णे निर्गतो जलमध्यतः
When twelve years were completed, he emerged from the midst of the water.
सक्रोधो मुनिशार्दूलो देववृन्दमुपागतः
The tiger among sages, filled with anger, approached the assembly of gods.
धिगिमां धिग्देवसंघं कर्म धिक्पापसंज्ञितम्
Fie upon this, fie upon the host of gods, and upon the act called sinful.
भवन्तो यच्च दातारो मोहिन्या वाञ्छितं वरम्
And what you, O Sirs, as givers, granted as a boon to Mohinī—
नास्मा हि लोके भवतीह शुद्धिः समिद्धवह्नौ पतने ऽपि देवाः
For her, O gods, there is no purification here in this world, not even by falling into a blazing fire.
न चापि चास्या भवतीह शुद्धिः समिद्भवह्नौ पतने ऽपि देवाः" प्रियायुतं मोक्षपदं निहत्य चकार भूमिं नृपवर्जितां च
Nor, O gods, is there purification for her here, even by falling into a blazing fire; having destroyed the beloved and the path to liberation, she made the earth devoid of kings.
न चापि राज्ञो निकटे च देवा नाप्येतु विष्णोः पदमव्ययं यत्
Nor, O gods, should she approach the king, nor attain the imperishable abode of Viṣṇu.
धिरजीवनं कर्ग्मविगर्हिताया देवाः सदा पापसमारतायाः
O gods, she who lives with patience but is always intent on sin, her conduct is always condemned.
हत्वा धरां समस्तां वा कां गतिं यास्यते सुराः
O gods, even if she were to slay the entire earth, what path would she attain?
सर्वदाप्यनया प्रोक्तं भुज्यतां हरिवासरे
It has always been declared by her: 'Let it be enjoyed on the day of Hari.'
भुज्यतां वासरे विष्णोर्हन्यतां गौर्द्विजान्विता
Let it be enjoyed on Viṣṇu's day; let the cow, along with the twice-born, be slain.
एतदज्ञानिनां प्रोक्तं ज्ञाननां तु न निर्णयः
This has been spoken for the ignorant; for the wise, there is no such conclusion.
तस्यापि शुद्धिर्गदिता प्राणायामशतेन हि
Even for her, purification is said to be achieved by a hundred breath-control practices.
ऋक्षेण संयुतायास्तु ज्येष्ठकुण्डाप्लवेन वा
Or by bathing in the Jyeṣṭha pool during the constellation of Ṛkṣa.
व्याहृते कथितं विप्रैः सेयमद्य सुनिष्ठुरा
The utterance has been declared by the Brahmins; today, this is very harsh.
भर्तुर्वाक्यं व्यपोह्यैव घातयित्वा सुतं प्रियम्
Having disregarded her husband's command and killed her beloved son—
विष्णुधर्मप्रलोप्त्रीयं बहुपापसमन्विता
She is a violator of Viṣṇu's law, possessed of many sins.
भवन्तो न्याययुक्तेषु धर्मयुक्तेषु तत्पराः
You, Sirs, are devoted to what is just and righteous.
धर्माधाराः स्मृता देवा धर्मो वेदेसमास्थितः
The gods are said to be the upholders of dharma; dharma abides in the Vedas.
यद्ब्रवीति पतिः किञ्चित्तत्कार्यमाविशङ्कया
Whatever the husband commands, that should be done without hesitation.
शुश्रूषा सा हि विज्ञेया न शुश्रूषा हि सेवनम्
That is to be understood as service; for service is not mere attendance.
सत्यस्य साधनार्थाय शपथैर्यन्त्रितो नृपः
The king, constrained by oaths for the sake of truthfulness,
तेन मोक्षं गतो राजा पापमस्यां विसृज्य च
By that, the king attained release, having abandoned sin in this matter.
