भग्नक्रियं यथा वैद्यं भग्नशाखं यथा द्रुमम्
Like a physician whose practice is broken, like a tree with a broken branch.
विधूम इव सप्तार्चिर्विरश्मिरिव भास्करः
Like a seven-flamed fire without smoke, like the sun without rays.
अतृप्तः कान्तया कान्तः पन्नगश्च विषोज्झितः
Like a lover unsatisfied by his beloved, and a serpent deprived of its poison.
शिरोभ्रष्टा यथा माला पर्वतो धातुवर्जितः
Like a garland with its head lost, like a mountain devoid of minerals.
स्वरहीनं यथा साम पद्महीनं यथा सरः
Just as a Sāma hymn without melody, or a lake without lotuses—
ज्ञानं ममत्वसंयुक्तं पुमांसं प्रकृतिं विना
So is knowledge joined with possessiveness, or a man without his essential nature.
तेजोहीनां तथापश्यन् मोहिनीं ते दिवौकसः
In the same way, the gods saw Mohinī deprived of her radiance.
आक्रोशवचनैः क्रूरैः पुत्रहत्यासमन्विताम्
With harsh words of rebuke, accompanied by the crime of killing a son—
स्ववाक्यपालनां चण्डामुचुर्देवाः समागताः
The assembled gods spoke fiercely of keeping one's own word.
नहि माधवभक्तानां विद्यते मानखण्डनम्
For the devotees of Mādhava, there is no loss of honor.
तन्न सिद्धं वरारोहे स प्रयातो ऽधुनाभवम्
O lovely one, that has not been accomplished; he has now departed to the next world.
एकादशी महापुण्या मोहिनी माधवे सिते
On the bright Ekādaśī, the supremely auspicious Mohinī day of Mādhava—
तस्यैवाध्युष्टिरतुला यत्सत्याचच्चलितो न हि
His steadfastness was unequalled, for he did not waver from the truth.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा पुत्रव्यापादने मतिम्
By deed, by mind, and by speech, he was intent on the destruction of his son.
तादृशं निकषं प्रोक्ष्य भगवान्मधुसूदनः
Having tested him in such a way, the blessed Madhusūdana—
पुत्रस्य च प्रियायाश्च भावं प्रेक्ष्य नृपस्य च
Beholding the feelings of the son, the beloved, and the king—
सदेहाः क्षीणकर्माणो ह्य् अङ्गारो ऽग्निरिवाहितः
With their bodies, their deeds exhausted, they remained like embers left in the fire.
सर्वयत्नेन सुभगे दोषः को ऽत्र तवाधुना
O fortunate one, with every effort, what fault is there in you now?
सिद्धौ वाप्यथ वासिद्धौ कर्मकृत्स्याद्दृथा न हि
Whether in success or in failure, one who acts is never truly lost.
सद्भावे घटमानस्य यदि कर्म न सिद्ध्यति
If, while striving sincerely, an action does not succeed—
यो न तस्मै प्रयच्छेत जीवनं जीवनाय वै
Whoever does not grant life to one who lives for life itself—
तस्माद् देयं वरारोहे अभीष्टं वरसुन्दरि
Therefore, O lovely one, what is desired should be given, O most beautiful.
किं न कुर्वन्ति विबुधास् त्वया सह वरानने
O beautiful one, what would the gods not do together with you?
विबुधैर् एवम् उक्ता तु मोहिनी लोकमोहिनी
Thus addressed by the gods, Mohinī, the deluder of the worlds—
धिगिदं जीवितं मह्यं येन कार्यं न साधितम्
Fie upon this life of mine, by which the task was not accomplished.
न तु लुप्तं हरिदिनं न भुक्तं हरिवासरे
Yet the holy day of Hari was not neglected, nor was it spent in enjoyment.
गतो मूर्ध्नि पदं दत्वा मम रुक्माङ्गदो हरिम्
Rukmāṅgada has gone, placing his head at the feet of Hari.
हंसं शुचिपदं व्योम प्रणवं बीजमव्ययम्
To the Swan, the pure-footed, the sky, the syllable Om, the imperishable seed—
शून्यं वियत्स्वरूपं च ध्येयध्यानविवर्जितम्
To the void, the form of space, free from meditation and the object of meditation—
परं धाम मनोग्राह्यं पुरुषाख्यं जगन्मयम्
To the supreme abode, grasped by the mind, called the Person, pervading the universe—
