O lord of men, one who does not approach his own wife at the proper season—
Or who, seeing another engaged in improper conduct, does not restrain them though able—
Those who count the sins of the wicked and report them to others—
Or who falsely accuses an innocent person of sin—
Half the sin of those wicked ones who are slandered passes away.
He experiences torment among sword-leaved trees and is born on earth with defective limbs.
He attains a most dreadful and painful state, feeding on phlegm.
For him, there is no expiation, even with thousands of acts of atonement.
Then, one born in a Chandala womb will always be an eater of cow flesh.
Having endured all torments, the Chandala is so for ten births.
For that, a vow equal to the expiation for killing a Brahmin must be performed.
But the thief goes to hell; the one whose property was stolen receives its result.
O King, one intent on reviling ascetics attains the state of a stone.
Then, all the torments are experienced in order, eating the food of dogs.
And now, hear of the fate of those who destroy flower gardens.
After that, they become beings made of excrement for twenty-one kalpas.
Those who destroy villages, burn them, or plunder them—
Those who eat leftovers, and those intent on betraying friends—
Those who have abandoned ancestral and divine rites, and who remain outside the path of the Vedas—
Thus, O King, there are many kinds of torments for evil-doers.
Of the torments for the wicked and the duties of the righteous, O King—
For all these sins, according to the ordinances of the Dharma Shastra—
Atonements must be performed in the presence of the Lord of the Lotus.
The Ganga, the Tulasi, association with the virtuous, and the praise of Hari—
Deeds offered to Vishnu indeed become fruitful.
Whatever is regular, occasional, or desire-motivated, and whatever else leads to liberation—
Devotion to Hari, supreme among people, destroys all sins.
O best of kings, it is indeed of the nature of tamas, rajas, and sattva.
That devotion which is of tamasic nature is considered the lowest, for it is based on wickedness.
Tamasic devotion, O Lord of the world, is directed not to Narayana but elsewhere; it is considered middling.
