सामान्यद्रव्यभोगादि निष्ठा चैवापरा भवेत्
There should be equality in the enjoyment of common property and pleasures, and another arrangement as well.
मदीया मम भक्ष्यार्थं त्वयानीता सुलोचना
With beautiful eyes, you have brought her for my consumption.
ततः स राक्षसः प्राह गच्छगच्छेति सत्वरम्
Then that Rākṣasa said quickly, 'Go, go!'
ततः सा राक्षसी घोरा श्रुत्वा पतिसमीरितम्
Then that terrible Rākṣasī, hearing her husband's command,
रूपयौवनसंयुक्तं विद्यारत्नविभूषितम्
Endowed with beauty and youth, adorned with the jewel of knowledge,
हृच्छयेन समाविष्टा तदन्तिकमुपागमत्
Overcome by love in her heart, she approached him.
कस्त्वं कस्मादिहायतः किमर्थमिह तिष्ठसि
"Who are you? Why have you come here? For what purpose do you remain here?"
स्वभर्त्राहं परित्यक्ता त्वां पतिं कर्तुमागता
"I have been abandoned by my husband; I have come to take you as my husband."
उवाच वचनं प्राज्ञो धैर्यमालंब्य तां शुभे
The wise one spoke words to her, steadying himself with courage, O auspicious lady.
मानुषास्तु स्मृता भक्ष्या राक्षसानां न संशयः
"Humans are considered food for the Rākṣasas—of this there is no doubt."
असंभाव्यं च जगति संभवेद्दैवयोगतः
"What is impossible in this world may come to pass by the power of fate."
हिडंबा राक्षसी विप्र भीमभार्या भविष्यति
"Hiḍimbā, the Rākṣasī, O Brāhmaṇa, will become Bhīma’s wife."
अवध्यः सर्वशस्त्राणां शक्त्या मृत्युमवाप्स्यति
"He who is invulnerable to all weapons will meet death through a spear."
भार्या तवाहं संजाता दव हि बलवत्तरम्
"I have become your wife; know that this is most powerful."
तदन्तरं समासाद्य भर्ता मे घोरराक्षसः
"Meanwhile, my husband, a terrible Rākṣasa, arrived."
सेयं समाश्रिता चात्र शालवृक्षे तु वासवी
"She, Vāsavī, has taken refuge here on the śāla tree."
यद्वधाय प्रक्षिपेत्तां सो ऽमरो ऽपि विनश्यति
"Whoever attempts to kill her, even if he is immortal, will perish."
त्वत्करे संप्रदास्यामि भर्तुर्निधनकाम्यया
"I will deliver her into your hands, desiring the death of my husband."
खादयिष्यति दुर्मेधास्त्वां च मां च न सशयः
"The wicked-minded one will devour both you and me, without doubt."
येनाहृता कुमारीह भार्यार्थं मन्दबुद्धिना
"By whom this maiden was brought here for the purpose of marriage, by that foolish one—"
व्यापादिते ऽस्मिन्नुभयोः क्रीडनं संभविष्यति
"When he is slain, then both will be able to enjoy themselves."
तदात्मकगृतपुण्यस्य न भवेयं हि भागिनी
"Therefore, I should not become the wife of one whose own merit is not sufficient."
तां गतिं हि प्रपद्ये ऽहं यद्येतदनृतं भवेत्
If this should prove to be false, then I myself shall attain that path.
या गतिर्विहिता घोरा तां गतिं प्राप्नुयाम्यहम्
Whatever dreadful path has been prescribed, that path I shall obtain.
या गतिस्तां द्विजश्रेष्ठ मिथ्या प्रोच्य समाप्नुयाम्
O best of twice-born, whatever path is reached by speaking falsehood, may I attain that path.
आत्मनो हनने या हि विहिता मुनिभिर्द्विज
Whatever path has been prescribed by sages for self-destruction, O twice-born,
पञ्चम्यां च तथाष्टम्यां यत्पापं मांसभक्षणे
And whatever sin arises from eating meat on the fifth or eighth lunar day,
यदुच्छिष्टे घृतं भोक्तुर्मैथुनेन दिवा च यत्
Whatever sin comes from eating clarified butter left over, or from sexual intercourse during the day,
भिक्षामदातुर्भिक्षुभ्यो विधवाया द्विभोजनात्
From a donor refusing alms to beggars, or from a widow eating twice,
तथा मृदमनुद्धृत्य स्नातुः परजलाशये
Likewise, from not removing clay before bathing, or bathing in water belonging to another,
