भ्रूणहत्यासमं पापं संप्रान्पोत्यतिदारुणम्
The sin incurred is as grave as the killing of a fetus, and its consequence is exceedingly terrible.
जले वा भुक्तशेषं च तेषां पापफलं शृणु
Hear now the sinful result for those who eat the remnants of food in water.
अत्युष्णतैलपाके ऽतितप्यन्ते भृशदारुणे
They are tormented intensely in boiling hot oil, suffering great agony.
ब्रह्मसंहरते यस्तु गन्धकाष्टं तथैव च
Whoever destroys sacred wood or sandalwood also incurs the same consequence.
ब्रह्मस्वहरणं राजन्निहामात्र च दुःखदम्
O King, the theft of sacred property brings suffering even in this very world.
कूटसाक्ष्यंवदेद्यस्तु तस्य पापफलंशृणु
Hear now the sinful result for one who gives false testimony.
इहपुत्राश्च विनश्यन्ति परघत्र च
In this world, his sons perish, and he meets a violent end.
ये चातिकामिनो मर्त्या ये च मिथ्याप्रवादिनः
Those mortals who are excessively lustful or who spread false rumors—
एवं षष्टिसहस्राब्दे ततः क्षाराम्बगुसेचनम्
For sixty thousand years, they are sprinkled with caustic brine.
ततो गजैर्निपातत्यन्ते मरुत्प्रपतनं यथा
After that, they are cast down by elephants, just as the wind causes a fall.
यस्त्वृतौ नाभिगच्छेत स्वस्त्रिंय मनुजेश्वर
O lord of men, one who does not approach his own wife at the proper season—
अन्याचाररतं दृष्ट्वा यः शक्तो न निवारयेत्
Or who, seeing another engaged in improper conduct, does not restrain them though able—
पापिनां पापगणनां कृत्वान्येभ्यो दिशन्ति विन्दति
Those who count the sins of the wicked and report them to others—
अपापे पातकं यस्तु समरोप्य विनिन्दति
Or who falsely accuses an innocent person of sin—
पापिनां निन्द्यमानानां पापार्द्धं क्षयमेति च
Half the sin of those wicked ones who are slandered passes away.
सो ऽसिपत्रे ऽनुभूयार्तिं हीनाङ्गोजायते भुवि
He experiences torment among sword-leaved trees and is born on earth with defective limbs.
अतीव दुःखदंरौद्रं स याति श्लोष्मभोजनम्
He attains a most dreadful and painful state, feeding on phlegm.
न तस्य निष्कृतिर्भूयः प्रायश्चित्तायुतैरपि
For him, there is no expiation, even with thousands of acts of atonement.
ततश्चण्डालयोनौ तु गोमांसाशी सदा भवेत्
Then, one born in a Chandala womb will always be an eater of cow flesh.
सर्वाश्चयातना भुक्त्वा चाण्डालो दशजन्मसु
Having endured all torments, the Chandala is so for ten births.
ब्रह्महत्यासमं तेन कर्त्तव्यं व्रतमेव च
For that, a vow equal to the expiation for killing a Brahmin must be performed.
अपहर्त्ता तु निरयी यस्यार्थस्तस्य तत्फलम्
But the thief goes to hell; the one whose property was stolen receives its result.
यतिनिन्दापरो राजन् शिलानमात्रे प्रयाति हि
O King, one intent on reviling ascetics attains the state of a stone.
श्वभोजनं ततः सर्वा भुञ्जते यातनाः क्रमात्
Then, all the torments are experienced in order, eating the food of dogs.
पुष्पारामभिदश्चैव यां गतिं यान्ति तच्छृणु
And now, hear of the fate of those who destroy flower gardens.
ततश्च विष्टाकृमयः कल्पानामेकविंशतिम्
After that, they become beings made of excrement for twenty-one kalpas.
ग्रामविध्वं सकानां तु दाहकानां च लुम्पताम्
Those who destroy villages, burn them, or plunder them—
उच्छिष्टभोजिनो ये च मित्रद्रोहपराश्व ये
Those who eat leftovers, and those intent on betraying friends—
उच्छिन्नपितॄदेवेज्या वेन्दमार्गबहिःस्थिताः
Those who have abandoned ancestral and divine rites, and who remain outside the path of the Vedas—
एवं बहुविधा भूप यातनाः पापकारिणणाम्
Thus, O King, there are many kinds of torments for evil-doers.
