हस्ते हि पापस्य दिवाप्रकीर्तेर्वत्स्यामि तत्कर्मकरः सुभुक्तः
Indeed, in the hand of sin, proclaimed by day, I shall remain, performing that act, well-enjoyed.
तच्चापि राजेन्द्र ददस्व देव्यै मज्जीवितं मज्जननीभवं वा
O king, give that too to the goddess—either my life or my birth from her.
विराजयित्वा स्वगुणैर्नृपौघान्करैरिवात्मप्रभवैः खशोभैः
Having adorned the hosts of kings with my own virtues, like rays with their own brilliance illuminating the sky,
संमार्जयित्वा विमलं यशः स्वं कथं सुखी स्यां नृपते ततः क्षमः
Having cleansed my own spotless fame, how could I, O king, then be happy and patient?
गतो वा नरकं घोरं कथं भोक्ष्ये हरेर्दिने
Even if I have gone to terrible hell, how shall I eat on the day of Hari?
भूयो भूयो वदति मां दुर्मेधाश्च सुबालिशा
Again and again, the foolish and very childish keep telling me—
मुक्त्वैवं वासरे विष्णोर्भोजनं पापनाशने
Thus, on the day of Vishnu, food destroys sin when taken.
तथापि नैव कर्ताहं भोजनं हरिवासरे
Still, I shall not eat food on the day of Hari.
दुन्दुभी कुर्वती नादं सा कथं वितथा भवेत्
How could the sound made by the drum become false?
अपेयं चैव पीत्वा तु किं जीवेच्छरदः शतम्
Even after drinking, one should not drink again—what if one lives a hundred years?
धिक्कृतो ऽपि जनैः सर्वैर्न भोक्ष्ये हरिवासरे
Even if censured by all people, I shall not eat on the day of Hari.
तच्चापि वरमेवात्र न भोक्ष्ये हरिवासरे
Even so, this is indeed the best—I shall not eat on the day of Hari.
व्रजद्भिर्मनुजैर्मार्गे निरयस्यातिदुःखितैः
On the road, as men go, filled with those suffering greatly from hell—
जनैः पूर्णा भविष्यन्ति मयि भुक्ते तु ताः सुत
Those will be filled with people, O son, if I eat.
समर्थो यस्तु शत्रूणां हर्षं संजनयेद्भुवि
He who is able to cause joy to his enemies on earth—
तन्न दास्यामि मोहिन्या याचितो ऽपि सुरासुरैः
That I shall not give to the enchantress, even if asked by gods and demons.
आकाशभासा स्वशिरश्छिन्द्यादेव वरासिना
He should sever his own head with the excellent sword, shining like the sky.
रुक्माङ्गदेति मन्नाम प्रसिद्धं भुवनत्रये
My name is Rukmangada, renowned throughout the three worlds.
स कथं भोजनं कृत्वा नाशये स्वकृतं यशः
How could he, after eating, destroy the fame he himself has earned?
विरमति तदपि न चेतो मामकमिति मोहिनीहेतोः
Yet even then, my mind does not desist, due to the deluding cause.
न त्वेव कुर्यां मधुसूदनस्य दिने सुपुण्ये ऽन्ननिषेवणं हि
But I would never partake of food on the auspicious day of Madhusudana.
आहूय जननीं शीघ्रं नाम्ना संध्यावलीं शुभाम्
He quickly summoned his mother, the auspicious Sandhyavali, by name.
पालयन्तीं धरां सर्वां पादविन्यासविक्रमैः
She protected the entire earth with the strides of her feet.
श्राविता मोहिनी वाक्यं पितुर्वाक्यं तथैव च
Mohini heard the words of her father, and likewise those of her mother.
भोजनाय स्थितामेनां नृपस्य हरिवासरे
She stood ready for the meal on the day sacred to Hari, in the king’s presence.
तथा विधीयतामेवं कुशलं चोभयोर्भवेत्
Let it be arranged thus, so that welfare may be for both.
मोहिनीं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा प्राह ब्रह्मसुता तदा
Then the son of Brahma addressed Mohini with gentle words.
नास्वादयति पापान्न संप्राप्ते हरिवासरे
He does not taste impure food when the day of Hari arrives.
सदा भवति या नारी भर्तुर्वचनकारिणी
The woman who always acts according to her husband’s words is blessed.
यद्यनेन पुरा देवि तव दत्तः करो गिरौ
If, O goddess, you were once given a hand by him on the mountain,
