उत्पाद्य कीर्तिं स्वयमेव जतुर्निकृन्तति प्राणभयाच्च पापात्
—having produced fame, he himself cuts it off, and out of fear for his life, from sin.
वृथा हि सूता मम सा जनित्री भवेन्निराशा द्विजपितृदेवाः
In vain is she my mother, the woman who bore me, and the twice-born, ancestors, and gods become hopeless.
किं तेन जातेन दुरात्मना हि ददाति हर्षं रिपुसुंदरीणाम्
What is the use of such a wicked-born one, who brings joy only to the enemies’ women?
न मन्यते वेदपुराणशास्त्रानन्ते पुरीं याति दिनेशसूनोः
He does not regard the Veda, Purāṇa, or scriptures, and goes to the city of the sun’s son.
वेदा न शास्त्रं न च तत्पुराणं न चापि सन्तः स्मृतयो न च स्युः
There is neither Veda, nor scripture, nor that Purāṇa, nor are there the holy smṛtis.
श्राद्धेन तेनापि न चास्ति तृप्तिः पितुश्च चीर्णेन हरेर्दिने तु
By that śrāddha, too, there is no satisfaction, nor by what is performed for the father on the day of Hari.
व्रतेन यद्विष्णुपदप्रदेन साकं क्षयाहेन वदन्तु मूढाः
The fools say that the vow which leads to Viṣṇu’s abode perishes along with the body.
कोपसंरक्तनयना भर्तारं पर्यभाषत्
With eyes reddened in anger, she addressed her husband.
धर्मबाह्यो हि पुरुषः पांशुना तुल्यतां व्रजेत्
A man who is outside of righteousness becomes equal to dust.
त्वया ममार्पितः पाणिर्वराय पृथिवीपते
O lord of the earth, my hand was given to you for the sake of a worthy husband.
कृतकृत्या तदा यास्ये प्राप्तो धर्मो मया तव
Then, having fulfilled my duty, I shall depart, for your righteousness has come to me.
उपधानं करिष्यामि स्वकं बाहुं न ते युधि
I shall make my own arm my pillow, not yours, in battle.
म्लेच्छेष्वपि न दृश्येत त्वादृशो धर्मलोपकः
Even among the foreigners, one such as you, who violates dharma, cannot be found.
एवमुक्त्वा वरारोहा ह्युदतिष्ठत्त्वरान्विता
Having spoken thus, the noble lady quickly rose up.
प्रस्थिता सा तदा तन्वी भूसुरैश्च समन्विता
Then that slender woman set out, accompanied by the brahmins.
वरं नीलांबरस्पर्शो नास्य धर्मच्युतस्य हि
It is better to touch a blue garment than to touch one who has fallen from dharma.
गौतमादिसमायुक्ता निर्जगाम गृहाद्ब्रहिः
Joined by Gautama and others, the brahmin woman departed from the house.
इत्येव शब्दं क्रोशन्ती ब्रह्मणोमानसोद्भवा
Crying out only these words, she who was born from Brahma's mind departed.
अटित्वा सकलामुर्वीं संप्राप्तो धर्मभूषणः
Having wandered over the whole earth, the ornament of dharma arrived.
कर्णाभ्यां तस्य शब्दो ऽसौ विश्रुतः पितृवत्सलः
That sound, renowned, reached his ears—he who was affectionate to his father.
धर्माङ्गदो धर्ममूर्तिः रुक्मागदसुतस्तदा
Then Dharmāṅgada, the embodiment of dharma, son of Rukmāṅgada,
पुनरुत्थाय विप्रेन्द्रान्ननाम विहिताञ्जलिः
Rising again, he bowed to the foremost brahmins with joined palms.
आलक्ष्य तरसा मातः प्राह राजन् कृताञ्जलिः
Seeing her hastily, he addressed her, O king, with joined palms:
एतैर्द्विजेन्द्रैः सहिता क्व त्वं संप्रस्थिताधुना
O mother, accompanied by these foremost brahmins, where are you now going?
पिता तवानृती पुत्र करो येन वृथा कृतः
Your father, O son, is untruthful, by whom you have been made worthless.
ध्वजाङ्कुशाङ्कितः श्रीमान्दक्षिणः कनकाङ्गदः
He is glorious, marked with a banner and goad on his right, adorned with golden armlets.
रुक्माङ्गदेन ते पित्रा न चाहं वस्तुमुत्सहे
Because of your father Rukmāṅgada, I am unable to remain.
मा कोपं कुरु मातस्त्वं निवर्त्ततस्व पितुः प्रिये
Do not be angry, mother; turn back, beloved of your husband.
कृता भार्या शिवः साक्ष्ये स्थितो यत्र सुराधिपः
The marriage has been performed, with Śiva as witness, where the lord of the gods was present.
न प्रयच्छति मे देयं तस्य वृद्धिं विचिन्तये
He does not give to me what should be given; I consider his prosperity.
