What was not done by me in childhood, nor what was done in youth—
Be gracious, O one with restless glances; be gracious, O woman of excellent complexion.
Or, if you do not desire that, O beautiful-eyed one, I will do something else.
Wherever you wish, I will take you, following at your feet, together with my wife.
Then, making two pillars of gold adorned with coral,
There I will swing you for many months, day and night.
It is better to eat the flesh of a dog-eater or even dog’s flesh, O lovely-faced one,
Than to commit the sin of destroying the three worlds, or of intercourse during the waning of the moon,
Or of eating on Vishnu’s day, or when the sixtieth part of oil remains,
Or in clarified butter on the full moon, or in liquor at the sun’s transition,
Or in stealing deposits, or in causing obstacles for a maiden,
Or having promised to give to a foremost Brahmin and then not giving,
Whatever sin exists in that food is present on the day of Hari.
By eating only once, at night, or by what is begged—
Of pregnant women, householders, those who are impoverished, and those who are ill,
And of those engaged in sacrificial offerings, those preparing for battle, and those serving the king,
This, Gautama told me while residing on Mount Mandara,
Those householders among the twice-born who maintain the sacred fire are to be known as such.
A pregnant woman is in her eighth month, and children are eight years old.
Those who are occupied with auspicious rites such as marriage, and those engaged in great festivals,
A wife devoted to her husband's welfare, with three kinds of ancient support,
What is the use, O king, of many words and conversations spoken by me?
If you do not give me joy, even after severing your own head,
Then, if your words are untruthful, I will not touch your body.
Especially among kings like you, O ruler of the earth,
The earth stands upon truth, O king; truth sustains the world.
By truth, all this—everything movable and immovable in the world—is upheld.
A young woman never bears a child beyond the proper time.
The means to attain the divine and other goals for men, O king, is founded upon truth.
You are stained by falsehood as by an act equal to drinking wine.
