स मे दण्ड्यश्च वाध्यश्च निर्वास्यो विषयाद्ध्रुवम्
He is to be punished, fined, or certainly banished from the realm.
हस्ता दमुञ्च तांबूलं सकर्पूरं नृपोत्तमः
The best of kings should place in his hand betel with camphor.
उदत्तिष्ठन्महीपालः शय्यायां रतिवर्द्धनः
The king, increaser of delight, should rise up from the bed.
देवि प्रातर्हरिदिनं भविष्यत्यधनाशनम्
O goddess, in the morning, the day will become free from misfortune.
तवाज्ञया मया कृच्छ्रं सन्ध्यावल्या तु कारितम्
By your command, I have performed the difficult twilight ritual.
अशेषपापबन्धस्य छेदनी गतिदायिनी
It cuts all bonds of sin and grants the path (to liberation).
तस्माद्धविष्यं भोक्ष्ये ऽहं नियतो मत्तगामिनी
Therefore, O proud one, I will eat the sacrificial food with restraint.
येन यास्यसि निर्वाणं दाहप्रलयवर्जितम्
By which you will attain liberation, free from burning and destruction.
जन्ममृत्युजराछेदि करिष्ये ऽहं तवाज्ञया
By your command, I will sever birth, death, and old age.
करप्रदानसहिता भवता सुकृताङ्किता
Marked by good deeds, along with the giving of your hand.
जन्मप्रभृति यत्पुण्यं त्वया यत्नेन संचितम्
The merit you have diligently accumulated since birth—
एहि चार्वङ्गि कर्त्तास्मि यत्ते मनसि वर्तते
Come, O beautiful-limbed one, I will do whatever is in your mind.
किं पुनर्ग्रामवित्तादि धरायुक्तं च भामिनि
What then of village wealth and land, O lovely one?
नोपोष्यं वामरं विष्णोर्भोक्तव्या यद्यहं प्रिया
If I am dear to you, I should not eat food not offered to Vishnu.
त्वत्संयोगं विना भूता भविष्यामि वरं विना
Without union with you, I will exist without any boon.
तदा त्यजोपवासं हि भुज्यतां हरिवासरे
Then, abandon fasting and eat on the day of Hari.
न चेद्दास्यसि राजेन्द्र भूत्वानृतवचाभवान्
O King, if you do not give, having spoken falsely, you will become one who utters untruth.
मैवं त्वं वद कल्याणि नेदं त्वय्युपपद्यते
Do not speak thus, O auspicious one; this is not fitting for you.
जन्मप्रभृत्यहं नैव भुक्तवान्हरिवासरे
From birth, I have never eaten on the day of Hari (Vishnu).
यौवनातीतमर्त्यस्य क्षीणेन्द्रियबलस्य च
For a mortal whose youth has passed and whose strength of senses is diminished,
न कृतं यन्मया बाल्ये यौवने न कृतं च यत्
What was not done by me in childhood, nor what was done in youth—
प्रसीद चपलापाङ्गि प्रसीद वरवर्णिनि
Be gracious, O one with restless glances; be gracious, O woman of excellent complexion.
अथवा नेच्छसि त्वं तत्करोम्यन्यत्सुलोचने
Or, if you do not desire that, O beautiful-eyed one, I will do something else.
यत्रेच्छसि नयिष्यामि पादचारी कलत्रयुक्
Wherever you wish, I will take you, following at your feet, together with my wife.
तर्हि स्वर्णमयौ स्तंभौ कृत्वा विद्रुमभूषितौ
Then, making two pillars of gold adorned with coral,
तत्र त्वां दोलयिष्यामि बहून्मासानहर्निशम्
There I will swing you for many months, day and night.
वरं श्वपचमांसं हि श्वमांसं वा वरानने
It is better to eat the flesh of a dog-eater or even dog’s flesh, O lovely-faced one,
त्रैलोक्यघातिनः पापं मैथुने शशिनः क्षये
Than to commit the sin of destroying the three worlds, or of intercourse during the waning of the moon,
भोजने वासरे विष्णोस्तैले षष्ट्यां व्यवस्थिते
Or of eating on Vishnu’s day, or when the sixtieth part of oil remains,
आज्येषु पौर्णमास्यां वै सुरायां रविसंक्रमे
Or in clarified butter on the full moon, or in liquor at the sun’s transition,
