व्रतादिकरणं राज्ञां नोक्तं क्वापि निदर्शने
The performance of vows by kings is not mentioned anywhere as an example.
दानं हि पालनं युद्धं तृतीयं भूभुजां स्मृतम्
For kings, giving, protecting, and fighting are remembered as the three duties.
मुहूर्तमपि राजेन्द्र न शक्नोमि त्वया विना
O King, I cannot endure even a moment without you.
यत्रोपवासकरणं मन्यसे वसाधाधिप
Wherever you wish to observe a fast, O lord of the earth,
एवमुक्ते तु वचने मोहिन्या रुक्मभूषणः
When these words were spoken by Mohinī, adorned with gold,
आहूता तत्क्षणात्प्राप्ता राजानं भूरिदक्षिणम्
She, summoned, arrived at that very moment before the king, generous with gifts.
संघृष्टं हि कुचाग्रेण स्वर्णकुंभनिभेन हि
Her breast, resembling a golden pitcher, brushed against him,
कृतां जलिपुटा भूत्वा भर्तुर्नमितकन्धरा
She, with bowed neck before her husband, formed a cup with her hands for water.
तव वाक्ये स्थिता कान्त दुःसापत्न्यविवर्जिता
O beloved, steadfast in your word, free from the pain of co-wives,
तथा तथा मम प्रीतिर्वर्द्धते नात्र संशयः
In this way, my affection grows ever more—of this there is no doubt.
सा तु श्येनी भवेद्राजंस्त्रीणि वर्षाणि पञ्च च
But she will become a hawk, O king, for three years and five.
आज्ञां मे देहि राजेन्द्र मा व्रीहां कामिकां कुरु
Give me your command, O king; do not make me desire rice.
तव वाक्येन हि चिरं मोहिनी रमिता मया
By your word, Mohinī has long been delighted by me.
प्रिया सौख्येन मुग्धस्य न गतो हरिवासरः
In the happiness of my innocent beloved, the day of Hari has not passed.
ज्ञातो ऽयं कार्तिको मासः सर्वपापक्षयङ्करः
This month of Kārtika is known, which destroys all sins.
इयं वारयते मां च व्रताद्ब्रह्मसुता शुभे
This daughter of Brahmā, O auspicious one, restrains me from the vow.
मामकं व्रतमाधत्स्व कृच्छ्राख्यं कायशोषकम्
Undertake for me the vow called Kṛcchra, which emaciates the body.
उवाच वाक्यं द्विजराजकक्त्राव्रतं चरिष्ये तव तुष्टिहेतोः
She spoke: 'O best of twice-born, I will observe your vow for the sake of your satisfaction.'
करोमि सौम्यं नरदेवनाथ क्षिपामि देहं ज्वलनेत्वदर्थम्
I will do it, O gentle lord of men; I will cast off my body, blazing, for your sake.
किन्त्वेवमेतद्व्रतकर्म भूयः करोमि सौम्यं नरदेवनाथ
But, O gentle lord of men, I will perform this vow-rite again.
व्रतं चकाराथ तदा हि देवी ह्यशेषपापौघविनाशनाय
Then the goddess undertook a vow for the destruction of all accumulated sins.
उवाच वाक्यं कुशकेतुपुत्रीं कृतं वचः सुभ्रु समीहितं ते
She spoke these words to the daughter of Kuśaketu: 'O beautiful-browed one, your wish has been fulfilled.'
विमुक्तकार्यस्तव सुभ्रु हेतोर्नान्यास्ति नारी मम सौख्यहेतुः
O lovely-browed one, for your sake I am freed from all obligations; there is no other woman who is the cause of my happiness.
ज्ञात्वा भवन्तं बहुकामयुक्तं त्रिविष्टपान्नाथ समागताहम्
Knowing you to be filled with many desires, O lord of the gods, I have come to you from heaven.
संदृश्यमानान्मम नाथ हेतोः स्नेहान्विताहं तव मन्दराद्रौ
Because of my affection for you, O lord, I have come from Mount Mandara to be seen by you.
अन्यचेतः कृतः कामः शवयोरिव संगमः
Union with another, whose mind is elsewhere, is like the coming together of two corpses.
त्वया कामवता कान्त दुर्ल्लभं यज्जगत्त्रये
O beloved, what is rare in all the three worlds is attained by you, who are filled with desire.
तदेव चामृतं लोके यत्पुरन्ध्र्यधरासवम्
That alone is nectar in this world, which is the wine from the lips of a noble woman.
एवमुक्त्वा परिष्वज्य राजानं रहसि स्थितम्
Having spoken thus, she embraced the king who was standing in private.
तस्यैवं रममाणस्य मोहिन्या सहितस्य हि
As he was thus enjoying himself together with Mohinī,
