शेषं दानवनारीभिर्बहुरत्नसमन्वितम्
The rest, along with the demon women, were adorned with many jewels.
संविभज्य पिता वित्तं धर्माङ्गदसमाहृतम्
The father distributed the wealth gathered by Dharmāṅgada.
सर्वासां मत्सुतो ब्रह्मन्पाणीन्गृह्णातु धर्मतः
Let my son, O Brahmin, righteously take the hands of them all.
वैवाह्यलग्ने नक्षत्रे मुहूर्ते सर्वकामदे
At the time of marriage, under the auspicious star and moment that grants all desires,
विवाहं कुरु पुत्रस्य मम धर्माङ्गदस्य वै
Perform the marriage of my son Dharmāṅgada.
सस मज्जेन्नरके घोरे ह्यप्रतिष्ठे युगायुतम्
He would sink into a terrible, bottomless hell for ten thousand ages.
आत्मा संस्थापितस्तेन येन संस्थापितः सुतः
The self is established by him by whom a son is established.
पुत्रस्य गुणयुक्तस्य निर्गुणस्यापि भूसुर
Even if the son is without qualities, O twice-born, or endowed with virtues,
यो न दारैश्च वित्तैश्च पुत्रान्संयोजयेत्पिता
A father who does not unite his sons with wives and wealth—
तस्माद्वृत्तियुताः कार्याः पुत्रा दारैः समन्विताः
Therefore, sons should be provided with means of livelihood and wives.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं राज्ञो द्विजस्तस्य पुरोहितः
Hearing the king's words, the Brahmin priest
स युवानिच्छमानो ऽपि स्त्रीसौख्यं लज्जाया सुतः
Though the son desired the pleasures of women in his youth, he was restrained by modesty.
वरुणात्मजया सार्द्धं नागकन्या मनोहराः
Together with the daughter of Varuna, the charming serpent maidens
उद्वाहयित्वा सर्वास्ता विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा
He married them all according to the prescribed rites.
कृतदारो ववन्दे ऽथ पादान्मातुः पितुर्मुदा
Having taken a wife, he then respectfully bowed at the feet of his mother and father with joy.
पितुर्वाक्येन मे देवि संजातो दारसंग्रहः
By the command of my father, O Lady, the taking of a wife has come to pass for me.
अव्ययं पितरं विज्ञं देवि शुश्रूषये ह्यहम्
I shall serve my wise and eternal father, O Lady.
कार्या मे पितृशुश्रूषा तव चैव दिवानिशम्
I must serve my father and you, day and night.
पितुः प्रसादाद्दीर्घोयुर्मनो नन्दय मे सुत
By my father's favor, may you have long life, my son; bring joy to my mind.
सपत्नीनां च सर्वासां हृदये संस्थिता ह्यहम्
I dwell in the hearts of all the co-wives.
व्यसर्जयत्ततः पुत्रं राज्यतन्त्रावलोकने
Then he dispatched his son to observe the affairs of the kingdom.
राज्यतन्त्रं तदखिलं चक्रे पितृवचः स्थितः
He managed all the affairs of the kingdom, abiding by his father's word.
अटनं सर्वदेशेषु वीक्षणं सर्वकर्मणाम्
He traveled through all regions, inspecting all activities.
हस्त्यश्वपोषणं चक्रे चारचक्रेक्षणं तथा
He ensured the care of elephants and horses, and also supervised the network of spies.
गृहे गृहे नराणां च चक्रे संरक्षणं नृपः
The king provided protection for the people in every household.
श्वश्रूर्वध्वा न कुत्रापि प्ररोदित्यवमानिता
Nowhere was a mother-in-law insulted or made to weep by her daughter-in-law.
न वर्णसंकरो राज्ये केषाञ्चिदभवत्पुनः
There was no intermixture of castes in the kingdom at any time.
न कञ्चुकविहीना तु भवेन्नारी सभर्तृका
No married woman in the kingdom should be without a veil.
मा सकेशा हि विधवा मास्त्वकेशा मभर्तृका
Let not a widow be with unbound hair; let not a woman without a husband have unbound hair.
सामान्यवृत्त्यदाता मे राज्ये ऽवसतु निर्घृणः
Let the cruel one who does not provide for the common livelihood not dwell in my kingdom.
