कर्मणा मनसा वाचा या पितुर्दुःखमाचरेत्
Whoever, by deed, thought, or word, causes sorrow to the father—
सर्वासां साधिका देवी मोहिनी जनकप्रिया
Among all, Mohinī, beloved of your father, is the foremost lady.
तत्पुत्रवचनं श्रुत्वा वेपमाना हि मातरः
Hearing those words of the son, the mothers trembled.
अवश्यं तव वाक्यं हि कर्तव्यं न्यायसंयुतम्
Certainly, your command, being just, must be carried out.
यो भार्यामुद्वहेद्भर्ता द्वितीयामपरामपि
If a husband should take another wife, a second one,
अनुज्ञाप्य यदा भार्ता ज्येष्ठामन्यां समुद्वहेतक्
When permitted, the husband may marry another, after the eldest.
ज्येष्ठया सहितः कुर्यादिष्टापूर्तं नरोत्तमः
The best of men should perform acts of charity and sacrifice together with his eldest wife.
श्रुत्वा तु मातृवचनं प्रहष्टेनान्तरात्मनो
Having heard his mother's words, he rejoiced inwardly.
सहस्रं नगराणां च ग्रामाणां प्रददौ तथा
He gave away a thousand cities and likewise villages.
एकैकस्य ददावष्टौ रथान्काञ्चनमालिनः
To each one, he gave eight chariots adorned with golden chains.
शुद्धस्य मेरुजातस्य अक्षयस्य नुपात्मजः
He, the prince, gave away pure, inexhaustible gold born of Meru.
दासानां च शतं साग्रं दासीनां च नृपात्मजः
The prince gave over a hundred male servants and likewise female servants.
युगन्धराणां भद्राणां शतानि दश वै पृथक्
He gave separately ten hundreds of fine Yugandhara horses.
वाटीनां तु सहस्राणां शतं प्रादाद्धसन्निव
He gave a hundred thousand garden enclosures as well.
अजाविकमसंख्यातमेकैकस्यै न्यवेदयत्
To each one, he presented countless herds of goats and sheep.
आखण्डलास्त्रयुक्तरथ भूषणस्य सुभक्तिमान्
He, devoted, gave chariots equipped with triple weapons and adorned with ornaments.
प्रददौ संहतान्कृत्वा वलयान्पञ्च सप्त च
He gave, having gathered them together, five and seven bracelets.
संध्यावल्यां स्थितानीह शीतांशुप्रतिमानि च
Here, he gave those resembling the moon, set in the Sandhyāvalī.
कुङ्कुमं चन्दनं भूरि कर्पूरं प्रस्थसंख्यया
He gave abundant saffron, sandalwood, and camphor, measured by the prastha.
मातॄणामविशेषेण पितुः सुखमभीप्सयन्
Desiring the happiness of his father, he gave to the mothers without distinction.
घृतक्षीरस्य पात्राणि पेयस्य विविधस्य च
He gave vessels of ghee and milk, and of various drinks.
स्थालीनां काञ्चनीनां हि सकुंभानां नृपात्मजः
The prince gave golden bowls and pitchers.
करेणूनां सवेगानां मांसविक्रान्तकन्धराम्
He gave swift female elephants with powerful necks.
शिबिकानां सवेषाणां पुंसां पीवरगामिनाम्
He gave palanquins with ornaments, and strong-bodied men.
एवं दत्वा बहुधनं बह्वीभ्यो नृपनन्दनः
Thus, having given much wealth to many, the delight of kings,
कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
With hands joined in reverence, spoke these words:
ब्रुवन्तु सर्वाः पितरं ममाद्य स्वैरेण संभुङ्क्ष्व नरेशं मोहिनीम्
Let all of you speak to my father today, freely enjoy the enchanting queen, O king,
विमोहिनीं ब्रह्मसुतां सुशीलां रमस्व सौख्येन रहः शतानि
Enjoy in happiness, in seclusion for hundreds of nights, the enchanting, virtuous daughter of Brahma,
स्वभूदुहित्रा सुचिरं रमस्व विदेहपुत्र्येव रघुप्रवीरः
Long delight with your own daughter, as the mighty Raghu did with the daughter of Videha,
पुत्रौजसा दुःखविमुक्तभावात्समीरितं वाक्यमिदं प्रतीहि
Accept these words, spoken out of filial strength and from a state free of sorrow,
