अथ कालेन चाल्पेन त्रिदोषो ऽस्य व्यजायत
Then, after a short time, the three humors arose in him.
शीतार्तः कंपमानो ऽसौ पत्न्यङ्गुलिमखण्डयत्
He, suffering from cold and trembling, broke his wife's finger.
तत्खण्डमङ्गुलेर्वक्त्रे स्थितं नृपतिवल्लभे
O beloved of the king, that broken finger remained in her mouth.
चितां सार्पिर्युतां चक्रे मध्ये धृत्वा पतिं तदा
She prepared a funeral pyre smeared with ghee, placing her husband in the middle.
मुखे सुखं समाधाय हृदये हृदयं तथा
She placed it comfortably in her mouth, and likewise heart to heart.
दाहयामास कल्याणी भर्तुर्देहं रुजान्वितम्
The virtuous woman burned the diseased body of her husband.
आत्मना सह चार्वङ्गी ज्वलिते जातवेदसि
With her own body, the beautiful-limbed woman entered the blazing fire.
विशोधयित्वा बहुपापसंघान्स्वकर्मणा दुष्करसाधनेन
By her own difficult and austere act, she purified herself from many heaps of sin.
न मातरीदृशो धर्मो लोकेषु त्रिषु लभ्यते
No other duty like that of a mother is found in the three worlds.
सपत्नीं तु सपत्नी हि किञ्चिदन्नं ददाति च
But a co-wife, being a co-wife, gives only a little food.
कुरु वाक्यं मयोक्तं हि स्वामिनि त्वं प्रसीद मे
Please, master, do what I have said; be gracious to me.
भवेत्पापक्षयः सम्यक् स्वर्गप्राप्तिस्तथाक्षया
There will be complete destruction of sin, and likewise, unfailing attainment of heaven.
अभिमन्त्र्य परिष्वज्य तनयं सा पुनः पुनः
Having blessed and embraced her son again and again,
करिष्ये वचनं पुत्र त्वदीयं धर्मसंयुतम्
Son, I will do your command, which is joined with righteousness.
शतपुत्रा ह्यहं पुत्र त्वयैकेन सुतेन हि
Though I am a mother of a hundred sons, O son, you alone are truly my child.
व्रतराजेन चीर्णेन प्राप्तस्त्वमचिरात्सुतः
You, my son, were obtained soon after the observance of the king of vows.
सद्यः प्रत्ययकारीदं महापातकनाशनम्
This act brings immediate certainty and destroys great sins.
वरमेकः कुलालंबी यत्र विश्रमते कुलम्
Better is one who upholds the family, where the family finds rest.
धन्यानि तानि शूलानि यैर्जातस्त्वं सुतो ऽनघ
Blessed are those spears by which you, O sinless one, were born as a son.
आह्लादयति यस्तातं जननीं वापि पुत्रकः
A son who brings joy to his father or mother,
एवमुक्त्वा तु वचनं देवी संध्यावली तदा
Having thus spoken these words, Queen Sandhyāvalī at that time—
तस्या वीक्षणमात्रेण परिपूर्णानि भूपते
By her mere glance, O king, all things became fulfilled.
अमृतस्वादुकल्पस्य जनस्य तु महीपते
O king, for people whose food is like nectar in taste,
परिवेषयदव्यग्रा मोडिन्याश्चारुहासिनी
She, with a lovely smile and cheerful mind, served the food without distraction.
शनैः शनैश्च बुभुजे इष्टमन्नं सुसंस्कृतम्
Slowly and gradually, she ate the well-prepared, desired food.
वीज्यमाना वरारोहा व्याजनेन सुगीतिना
The beautiful lady was fanned with a fan, accompanied by sweet singing.
सा भुक्ता ब्रह्मतनया तदन्नममृतोपमम्
That daughter of Brahma, having eaten, found the food to be like nectar.
जगृहे पुत्रदत्तं तु तांबूलं तत्सुगन्धिमत्
She took the betel offered by the son, fragrant and pleasing.
ततः प्रहस्य शनकैः प्राह संध्यावलीं नृप
Then, smiling gently, she spoke to Saṃdhyāvalī, O King.
न मया हि परिज्ञाता श्रमस्वेदितया शुभे
Because of fatigue and sweat, O auspicious one, I did not recognize you.
