भ्रातृस्त्रीगमनं चैव वयस्यस्त्रीनिषेवणम्
Having intercourse with a brother's wife, and with a friend's wife—
अकाले कर्मकरणं पुत्रीगमन मेव च
Performing acts at improper times, and intercourse with one's own daughter—
इत्येवमादयो राजन्महापातकसंज्ञिताः
These, O King, are known as major sins.
यथाकथञ्चित्पापानामेतेषां परमर्षिभिः
Some of these sins, in whatever manner, have been described by the great sages.
प्रायश्चित्तविहीनानि पापानि शृणु भूपते
Hear, O King, of those sins for which there is no prescribed atonement.
ब्रह्महत्यादिपापानां कथञ्चिन्निष्कृतिर्भवेत्
For sins such as killing a Brahmin, expiation is possible in some way.
विश्वस्तघातिनं चैव कृतन्घानां नरेश्वर
And one who betrays trust, as well as those who commit murder, O king,
शूद्रान्नपुष्टदेहानां वेदनिन्दारतात्मनाम्
And those whose bodies are sustained by food from Śūdras, who are devoted to reviling the Vedas,
सत्कथानिन्दकानाञ्च नेहामुत्रचनिष्कृतिः
And those who speak ill of sacred narratives—there is no expiation for them, here or hereafter.
नतस्यनिष्कृतिर्दृष्टाप्रायश्चितशतैरपि
For them, no atonement is seen, even through hundreds of acts of penance.
तस्माद्विजस्तान्नेक्षेत यतो धर्मबहिष्कृताः
Therefore, a twice-born should avoid them, for they are cast out from righteousness.
ज्ञात्वा चेन्निष्कृतिर्नास्ति शास्त्राणामिति निश्वयः
Knowing that there is no expiation for them, this is the settled conclusion of the scriptures.
प्रायश्चित्तविहीनानि प्रोक्तान्यन्यानि च प्रभो
Other sins, O lord, are declared to lack prescribed penance as well.
पापानि तेषां नरकान्गदतो मे निशामय
Hear from me the hells that are the result of their sins.
तदन्ते पृथिवीमेत्य सत्पजन्मसु गर्दभाः
After that, coming to earth, they are born as donkeys in seven births.
आशताब्दं विट्कृमयः सर्पा द्वादशजन्मसु
For a hundred years, they become dung-eating worms, and for twelve births, serpents.
शताब्दं स्थावराश्चैव ततो गोधाशरीरिणः
For a hundred years, they are immobile beings, then they take the bodies of iguanas.
ततः षोडश जन्मानि शूद्राद्या हीनजातयः
After that, for sixteen births, they are born as Śūdras and other low castes.
प्रतिग्रहपरा नित्यं ततो निरयगाः पुनः
Always intent on accepting gifts, then they go to hell again.
तत्र कल्पद्वयं स्थित्वा चाण्डालाः शतजन्मसु
There, after remaining for two kalpas, they become Caṇḍālas for a hundred births.
शुनां योनिशतं गत्वा चाण्डालेषूपजायते
Having entered the womb of dogs for a hundred births, they are then born among Caṇḍālas.
तदन्ते नरकं याति युगानामेकविंशतिम्
After that, they go to hell for twenty-one yugas.
दानानां विन्घकर्त्तारस्तेषां पापफलं शृणु
Hear the sinful result for those who misappropriate gifts.
तदन्ते तत्पपाषाणग्रहणं वत्सरत्रघयम्
After that, they are made to carry that very stone of sin for a year.
शोचन्तः स्वृनिकर्माणि परद्रव्यापहारकाः
Those who grieve over their own actions, who steal the property of others,
कर्मणा तत्र पच्यन्ते नरकान्गिषु सन्ततम्
Are continually cooked by their deeds in the limbs of hell.
यावद्युगसहस्रं तु तत्पायः पिण्डभक्षणम्
For a thousand ages, they consume lumps of that boiling substance.
निरुच्छ्वासं महाघोरे कल्पार्द्धं निवसन्ति ते
Without breath, in the most dreadful place, they dwell for half a kalpa.
तत्पताम्रस्त्रियस्तेन सुरुपाभरणैर्युताः
There, copper women adorned with beautiful ornaments,
विद्ववन्तं भयेनासां गृह्णन्ति प्रसभं च तम्
Seize the learned man forcefully, out of fear.
