जगाम सुमहान्कालो वर्तन्त्या दुःखसागरे
A very long time passed for her, suffering in the ocean of sorrow.
अभक्षयत निष्पावं दुर्मेधास्तैलमिश्रितम्
The foolish one ate unripe pulses mixed with oil.
अभवद्दारुणो रोगो गुदे तस्य भगन्दरः
A severe disease arose in her rectum, namely fistula.
तस्य गेहे स्थितं वित्तं समादाय जगाम सा
She took the wealth kept in his house and departed.
ततः स दीनवदनो व्रीडया च समन्वितः
Then he, with a dejected face and filled with shame,
परिपालय मां देवि वेश्यासक्तं सुनिष्ठुरम्
O lady, protect me, who am harsh and attached to the courtesan.
रमते वेश्यया सार्द्धं बहूनब्दान्सुमध्यमे
He enjoys himself with the courtesan for many years, O slender-waisted one.
सो ऽशुभानि समाप्नोति जन्मानि दश पञ्च च
He attains evil births, fifteen in number.
तवापमानतो देवि मनो न कलुषीकृतम्
O goddess, my mind has not been tainted by your disrespect.
तानि सक्षमते विद्वान् स विज्ञेयो नृणां वरः
The wise man endures those things; he is to be known as the best among men.
तद्भजन्त्या न मे दुःखं न विषादः कथञ्चन
By worshipping that, I have neither sorrow nor any kind of despair.
अनीतं जनकाद्वित्तं बन्धुभ्यो वरवर्णिनी
The wealth taken from my father was distributed to the relatives, O woman of noble complexion.
दिवा दिवा त्रिर्यत्नेन रात्रौ गुह्यविशोधनम्
Day after day, with threefold effort, at night she cleansed the secret places.
नखेन पातयेद्भर्तुः क्रिमीन्कुष्ठाच्छनैः शनैः
With her nail, she would gently and gradually remove the worms from her husband's leprosy.
न देवि रात्रौ स्वपिति न दिवा च वरानना
O goddess, she does not sleep at night, nor does she, O beautiful-faced one, sleep by day.
यद्यस्ति वसुधा देवी पितरो देवतास्तथा
If there is land, O goddess, then so too are ancestors and deities.
चण्डिकायै प्रदास्यामि रक्तं मांससमुद्भवम्
I shall offer to Caṇḍikā blood that has arisen from flesh.
सादरं कारयिष्यामि उपवासान्दशैव तु
I shall perform ten fasts with reverence.
नोपभोक्ष्यामि मधुरं नोपभोक्ष्यामि वै घृतम्
I will not enjoy anything sweet, nor will I partake of ghee.
जीवतां रोगहीनो हि भर्ता मे शरदां शतम्
My husband, free from disease, lived for a hundred autumns.
अथ कालेन चाल्पेन त्रिदोषो ऽस्य व्यजायत
Then, after a short time, the three humors arose in him.
शीतार्तः कंपमानो ऽसौ पत्न्यङ्गुलिमखण्डयत्
He, suffering from cold and trembling, broke his wife's finger.
तत्खण्डमङ्गुलेर्वक्त्रे स्थितं नृपतिवल्लभे
O beloved of the king, that broken finger remained in her mouth.
चितां सार्पिर्युतां चक्रे मध्ये धृत्वा पतिं तदा
She prepared a funeral pyre smeared with ghee, placing her husband in the middle.
मुखे सुखं समाधाय हृदये हृदयं तथा
She placed it comfortably in her mouth, and likewise heart to heart.
दाहयामास कल्याणी भर्तुर्देहं रुजान्वितम्
The virtuous woman burned the diseased body of her husband.
आत्मना सह चार्वङ्गी ज्वलिते जातवेदसि
With her own body, the beautiful-limbed woman entered the blazing fire.
विशोधयित्वा बहुपापसंघान्स्वकर्मणा दुष्करसाधनेन
By her own difficult and austere act, she purified herself from many heaps of sin.
न मातरीदृशो धर्मो लोकेषु त्रिषु लभ्यते
No other duty like that of a mother is found in the three worlds.
सपत्नीं तु सपत्नी हि किञ्चिदन्नं ददाति च
But a co-wife, being a co-wife, gives only a little food.
