देवाः पराङ्मुखास्तस्य पितरं यो ऽवमन्यते
The gods turn away from one who disrespects his father.
जित्वा द्वीपवतीं पृथ्वीं बहुभूपालसंवृताम्
Having conquered the earth with its islands, surrounded by many kings,
पितुरभ्यधिकः पुत्रो यद्भवेत्क्षितिमण्डले
If a son becomes greater than his father upon the earth,
त्वया साधयता भूपान्यथा हरिदिनं शुभम्
By you, O king, the rulers have been subdued, as Hari did on an auspicious day.
क्क गतस्तु भवांस्तात निवेश्य मयि संपदः
Where have you gone, father, after entrusting your wealth to me?
मन्ये निर्वेदमापन्न इमां सृष्ट्वा प्रजापतिः
I think the Creator, having made this world, has fallen into disillusion.
मन्ये भूधरजातेयमथवा सागरोद्भवा
I think she is born of the mountains, or perhaps she has arisen from the ocean.
बालाग्रशतभागो हि व्यलीको नोपपद्यते
Not even a hundredth part of a hair's tip of fault can be found in her.
एवं विधा मे जननी यदि स्यात्को ऽन्यो ऽस्ति मत्तः सुकृती मनुष्यः
If such a woman were my mother, who among men could be more fortunate than I?
सत्य ते जननी पुत्र संप्राप्ता मन्दरे मया
Son, your mother has indeed been found by me on Mandara.
कुर्वन्ती दारुणं पुत्र तपो देवगिरौ पुरा
Long ago, son, she performed severe austerities on Devagiri.
मन्दरे पर्वतश्रेष्ठे बहुधातुसमन्विते
On Mandara, the foremost of mountains, rich in many minerals,
स्थिता गानपरा दृष्टा मया तत्र सुदर्शना
There I saw her, devoted to singing, beautiful in appearance.
अनङ्गबाणसंविद्धो व्याधविद्धो यथा मृगः
Struck by the arrows of Kāma, like a deer wounded by a hunter,
वृतश्चैवापि भर्तृत्वे किञ्चित्प्रार्थनया सह
She was chosen as a wife, with a slight request for marriage.
सेयं भार्या विशालाक्षी कृता भूधरमस्तके
This wide-eyed woman became my wife atop the mountain.
दिनत्रयेण त्वरितः संप्राप्तस्तव सन्निधौ
Within three days, I hastened and arrived in your presence.
इयं हि जननी पुत्र तव प्रीतिविवर्द्धिनी
This is your mother, son, who increases your joy.
तत्पितुर्वचनं श्रुत्वा हयसंस्थामरिन्दमः
Hearing his father's words, the conqueror of foes mounted his horse.
प्रसीद देवि मातस्त्वं भृत्यो दासः सुतस्तव
Be gracious, O goddess, O mother; I am your servant, your son.
तं पुत्रमवनीं प्राप्तं मोहिनी प्रेक्ष्य भूपते
Seeing her son, who had come to earth, Mohinī gazed at him, O king.
अवागूहत बाहुभ्यामुत्थाप्य पतितं सुतम्
She embraced her fallen son with her arms and lifted him up.
ततस्तां सुमनोज्ञैस्तु चारुवस्त्रैस्च भूषणैः
Then she adorned him with delightful garments and beautiful ornaments.
स्वपृष्ठे चरणं कृत्वा तस्या राजीवलोचनः
Placing his foot on her back, the lotus-eyed one...
भूपालैः संवृतो गच्छन्पभ्द्यां धर्माङ्गदः सुतः
Surrounded by kings, Dharmāṅgada, the son, proceeded on the road.
स्तूयमानः स्वयं चापि मेघगंभीरया गिरा
He was praised, and he himself spoke with a voice deep as thunderclouds.
नवा नवतरा भार्याः पितुरिष्टा मनोहराः
His father desired ever-new, ever-younger wives, enchanting to behold.
पितुर्दुःखेन किं सौख्यं पुत्रस्य हृदि वर्तते
What happiness can remain in a son's heart when his father is afflicted with sorrow?
मातॄणां वन्दने मह्यं गहत्पुण्यं भविष्यति
For me, there will be great merit in bowing to the mothers.
एकमुच्चरमाणो ऽसौ राजभिः परिवारितः
He, uttering a single word, was surrounded by the kings.
