जगाम स्वर्गलोकं च इन्द्रादीनामनुज्ञया
He went to the heavenly realm with the permission of Indra and the others.
कामगेन विमानेन पूज्यमानो ऽमरैरपि
In a celestial chariot, created by desire, he was honored even by the immortals.
देवानामुपकारार्थं श्रुत्वा दैत्यैः पराजितान्
Hearing that the gods had been defeated by the demons, for the sake of helping the gods—
प्रदत्तानि वरारोहे श्येनाय क्षुधिताय वै
O lovely one, boons were given to the hungry hawk.
तेनापि जीवितं दत्तं पन्नगाय वरानने
By him, life was also granted to the serpent, O beautiful-faced one.
शुचावमेध्ये ऽपि शुभे समं वर्षति वारिदः
Even on a pure and sacred place, the cloud rains equally, O auspicious one.
तस्मादिमां वरारोहे गृह गोधां सुदुःखिताम्
Therefore, O lovely one, take this house-lizard, who is greatly distressed.
विमोहिनीं तिरस्कृत्य गृहगोधामुवाच ह
Casting aside the bewildering one, he spoke to the house-lizard.
गच्छ विष्णुगतांल्लोकान्विधूताशेषकल्मषा
Go to the worlds attained by Viṣṇu, freed from all remaining sins.
विमुच्य देहं तज्जीर्णं गृहगोधासमुद्भवम्
Abandoning that worn-out body, arisen as a house-lizard,
सीमन्तमिव कुर्वाणा वैष्णवं पदमुद्भुतम्
She attained the supreme Vaiṣṇava abode, as if marking a boundary.
तम्मादियं चैव शिखिप्रदीपा जगत्प्रकाशाय नृपप्रसूता
That one, born from the king, and the peacock-lamp, are for the illumination of the world.
उवाच मोहिनीं हृष्टः शीघ्रमारुह्यतां हयः
The king, delighted, spoke to Mohinī: 'Quickly, mount the horse!'
तदाकर्ण्य वचो राज्ञो मोहिनी मदलालसा
Hearing the king’s words, Mohinī, intoxicated with passion,
उवाच च वचो भूपं भर्तारं चारुहासिनी
The lovely-smiling one spoke these words to the king, her husband:
पुत्रवक्त्रं स्पृहा द्रष्टुं लंपटा तव वर्तते
'A longing to see your son’s face arises in you, greedy one.'
मोहिन्या वचनं श्रुत्वा तप्रस्थे नगरं प्रति
Hearing Mohinī’s words, the king set out toward the city.
वनानि सुविचित्राणि मृगान्बहुविधानपि
He saw the forests, most wondrous, and many kinds of animals.
सरांसि च विचित्राणि भूभागान्सुमनोहरान्
He saw the wondrous lakes and the most delightful regions of the earth.
आकाशस्थो महीपालो नमस्कृत्य त्वरान्वितः
The king, standing in the sky, bowed with haste.
पश्यमानो बहून्देशान्धनधान्यसमन्वितान्
Observing many lands filled with wealth and grain,
तमायान्तं नृपं श्रुत्वा चारैर्द्धर्माङ्गदः सुतः
Hearing from spies that the king was approaching, Dharmāṅgada, the son,
एषा प्कराशमायाति उदीची दिङ् नृपोत्तमाः
Behold, O best of kings, that procession is coming from the northern direction.
तस्माद्गच्छामहे सर्वे संमुखं ह्यवनीपतेः
Therefore, let us all go to meet the lord of the earth face to face.
स याति नरकं घोरं यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्द्दशा
He goes to a dreadful hell, as do the fourteen Indras,
पदे पदे यज्ञफलं प्रोचुः पौराणिका द्विजाः
At every step, the twice-born narrators of the Purāṇas have declared the fruit of sacrifice.
अभिवादयितुं प्रेम्णा एष मे देवदेवता
With love, I have come to offer my respects to my revered deity.
जगाम संमुखं पद्भ्यां क्रोशमात्रं पितुस्तदा
Then, approaching on foot, he came within a krośa of his father.
स गत्वा दूरमध्वानमाससादनृपं पथि
Having traveled a long distance, he met the king on the road.
शिरसा राजभिः सार्द्धं प्रणाममकरोत्तदा
Then, together with the kings, he bowed with his head.
