या त्वया संगमे पुण्ये कृता श्रवणद्वादशी
That observance of Śravaṇa-dvādaśī, performed by you in holy union,
प्रेतनिर्यातनी पुण्या मानसेप्सितदायिनी
Is meritorious, delivers the departed, and grants the desired results to the mind.
सर्वतीर्थफलावाप्तिं कुरुते नात्र संशयः
It bestows the fruit of all pilgrimages; there is no doubt about this.
सर्वं तदक्षयं भूप यत्कृतं विजयादिने
All that is done on the day of victory, O king, is imperishable.
द्वादश्यामुपवासेन त्रयोदश्यां तु पारणे
On the twelfth day, by fasting; and on the thirteenth, by breaking the fast.
दयां कृत्वा महीपाल धर्ममूर्तिर्भवान् क्षितौ
Showing compassion, O king, you become the embodiment of righteousness upon the earth.
गृहगोधावचः श्रुत्वा मोहिनी वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of the house-lizard, Mohinī spoke.
तस्मात्किमनया कार्यं पापया भर्तुदुष्टया
Therefore, what should be done with this sinful woman, whose husband is wicked?
साधुभ्यो यत्कृतं राजन्यशःस्वर्गकरं भवेत्
Whatever is done for the virtuous by the king brings fame and leads to heaven.
शर्करामिश्रितं क्षीरं काद्रवेये नियोजितम्
Milk mixed with sugar was assigned to the offspring of Kadru.
परित्यजेमां त्वं पापां गच्छावो नगराय वै
Let us abandon this sinful woman and go to the city.
न साधूनामिदं वृत्तं भवतीति वरानने
O beautiful-faced one, this conduct does not belong to the virtuous.
विप्रपन्ना वरारोहे परोपकरणाय वै
O lovely one, the Brahmins are devoted to helping others.
चन्दनं पादपाः संतः परोपकरणाय वै
The sandalwood trees, being noble, exist for the benefit of others.
चाण्डालमन्दिरावासी भार्यातनयविक्रयी
One who dwells in the house of a Chandala and sells wife and children.
तस्य सत्येन संतुष्टादेवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
The gods, led by Indra, were pleased with his truthfulness.
यदि तुष्टा हि विबुधा वरं मे दातुमर्हथ
If the gods are indeed satisfied, you ought to grant me a boon.
सबालवृद्धतरुणा सनारी सचतुष्पदा
With children, elders, youths, women, and quadrupeds.
अयोध्यापातकं गृह्य गन्ताहं नरकं ध्रुवम्
Having committed the sin of Ayodhya, I shall certainly go to hell.
स्वर्गं विबुधशार्दूलाः सत्यमेतन्मयेरितम्
O foremost among gods, heaven is indeed what I have declared.
जगाम स्वर्गलोकं च इन्द्रादीनामनुज्ञया
He went to the heavenly realm with the permission of Indra and the others.
कामगेन विमानेन पूज्यमानो ऽमरैरपि
In a celestial chariot, created by desire, he was honored even by the immortals.
देवानामुपकारार्थं श्रुत्वा दैत्यैः पराजितान्
Hearing that the gods had been defeated by the demons, for the sake of helping the gods—
प्रदत्तानि वरारोहे श्येनाय क्षुधिताय वै
O lovely one, boons were given to the hungry hawk.
तेनापि जीवितं दत्तं पन्नगाय वरानने
By him, life was also granted to the serpent, O beautiful-faced one.
शुचावमेध्ये ऽपि शुभे समं वर्षति वारिदः
Even on a pure and sacred place, the cloud rains equally, O auspicious one.
तस्मादिमां वरारोहे गृह गोधां सुदुःखिताम्
Therefore, O lovely one, take this house-lizard, who is greatly distressed.
विमोहिनीं तिरस्कृत्य गृहगोधामुवाच ह
Casting aside the bewildering one, he spoke to the house-lizard.
गच्छ विष्णुगतांल्लोकान्विधूताशेषकल्मषा
Go to the worlds attained by Viṣṇu, freed from all remaining sins.
विमुच्य देहं तज्जीर्णं गृहगोधासमुद्भवम्
Abandoning that worn-out body, arisen as a house-lizard,
