भर्तृस्थानं परित्यज्य स्वपितुर्वापि वर्जितम्
Having abandoned the place of her husband, or even that of her father,
सर्वधर्मविहीनापि नारी भवति सूकरी
Even if devoid of all duties, a woman does not become impure.
ममिष्यामित्वया सार्द्धमीशस्त्वं सुखदुःखयोः
"I will go with you; you are the lord in both happiness and sorrow."
परिष्वज्य वरारोहामिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Embracing the noble lady, he spoke these words:
मा शङ्कां कुरु वामोरु यतो दुःखं भविष्यति
"Do not be anxious, slender-thighed one, for sorrow will arise from that."
एहि गच्छाव तन्वङ्गि सुखाय नगरं प्रति
"Come, let us go, slender-limbed one, to the city for happiness."
भुङ्क्ष्व भोगान्मया सार्द्धं तत्रस्था स्वेच्छया प्रिये
"Enjoy pleasures there with me as you wish, dear one."
संप्रस्थिता नूपुरगोषयुक्ता विकर्षयन्ती गिरिजातशोभाम्
She set out, adorned with the sound of anklets, drawing the beauty of the mountain-born.
पश्यमानौ बहून्भावान्गिरिजातान्मनोहरमनोहरान्
Beholding many delightful forms born of the mountain, charming to the mind,
केचिन्नीलसमप्रख्याः केचित्काञ्चनसत्विषः
Some appeared like dark blue, others shone with golden brilliance.
अन्योन्यश्लेषतां प्राप्तौ सकलैः स्थावरैरिव
They attained mutual embrace, as if with all the immovable things.
खन्यमानं खुरेणोर्वी कुलिशाभेन वेगिना
The earth was being dug by a hoof, swift as a thunderbolt.
गृहगोधाभवत्तस्मिन् भूभागान्तर्गता किल
There, within the ground, was indeed a house-lizard.
विदीर्यमाणां नृपतिरपश्यत्स दयापरः
The king, full of compassion, saw her being torn apart.
ततः स वृक्षपत्रेण कोमलेन महीपतिः
Then the king, with a tender leaf,
ततस्तु मोहिनीं प्राह प्रेक्ष्य मूर्च्छागतां हि ताम्
Then, seeing her fallen unconscious, he spoke to Mohinī.
येन मूर्च्छागतां सिंचे गृहगोधां विमर्द्दिताम्
"With this, sprinkle the house-lizard who has been crushed and has lost consciousness."
तेनाभ्यषिं चन्नृपतिर्गृहगोधां विमूर्च्छिताम्
With that, the king sprinkled the unconscious house-lizard.
अभिघातेषु सर्वेषु शस्तं वारिप्रसेचनम्
In all injuries, sprinkling water is considered auspicious.
संप्राप्तचेतना भूप गोधा वचनमब्रवीत्
When the king regained consciousness, Godhā spoke these words.
रुक्माङ्गद महाबाहो निबोध मम चेष्टितम्
O Rukmāṅgada, mighty-armed one, listen to my actions.
रूपयौवनसंपन्ना तस्य नातिप्रिया विभो
Though endowed with beauty and youth, she was not greatly dear to him, O lord.
नान्यस्य कस्यचिद्द्वेष्टा स तु मे नृपते पतिः
He is not hostile to anyone; yet, O king, he is my husband.
अपृच्छं प्रमदा राजन्यास्त्यक्ताः पतिभिः किल
I questioned the women—royal ladies abandoned by their husbands, indeed.
अस्माकं प्रत्ययो जातो भर्तृत्यागावमाननात्
We gained conviction due to the disrespect from abandonment by our husbands.
त्वं पृच्छ तां वरारोहे दास्यते भेषजं शुभम्
You ask that beautiful woman; she will give you an auspicious remedy.
ततो ऽहं त्वरितं गत्वा तासां वाक्येन भूपते
Then, O king, I quickly went, following their words.
शतस्तंभसमायुक्तः कान्तिमत्सुधया युतः
She was adorned with a hundred pillars and radiant with lovely nectar.
प्रावृतां दीर्घवस्त्रेण सन्ध्यारागसवर्णिनीम्
She was covered with a long garment, resembling the hue of twilight.
परिचारकैस्तु संयुक्ता वीज्यमाना शनैः शनैः
Attended by servants, she was gently fanned again and again.
