नादेयं विद्यते राजन्गृहायातस्य ते ऽधुना
There is no gift, O king, for you now, since you have come to my house.
पटहं वासरे विष्णोः प्रजाभोजनवारणम्
The drum on Viṣṇu’s day is for the prohibition of feeding the people.
प्राप्तमेव मया सर्वं त्वदङ्घ्रियुगलेक्षणात्
I have already obtained everything merely by beholding your pair of feet.
तं पृच्छामि द्विजाग्र्यं त्वां सर्वसंदेहभञ्जनम्
I ask you, O foremost of twice-born, you who dispel all doubts.
या विलोकयते दृष्ट्या मां सदा मन्मथाधिकम्
She who always gazes at me with a glance surpassing that of Kāmadeva—
तत्र तत्र निधानानि प्रकाशयति मेदिनी
Here and there, the earth reveals treasures.
सदा भाति मुनिश्रेष्ठ शारदेन्दुप्रभा यथा
She always shines, O best of sages, like the radiance of the autumn moon.
अन्नं पचति यत्स्वल्पं तस्मिन्भुञ्जन्ति कोटयः
Whatever little food she cooks, millions partake of it.
नावज्ञा क्रियते ब्रह्मन् वाक्येनापि प्रसूप्तया
No disrespect is shown, O Brāhmaṇa, even by a word, even when she is asleep.
अहमेव धरापृष्ठे पुत्री द्विजवरोत्तम
I myself am the daughter upon the earth, O best of excellent Brāhmaṇas.
एकद्वीपपतिश्चाहं विदितो धरणीतले
And I am known on the surface of the earth as the lord of a single island.
मदर्थे येन विप्रेन्द्र समानीता नृपात्मजा
For my sake, O chief of Brāhmaṇas, the king’s daughter was brought.
अथ तेनाधिपतिना रूपद्रविणशालिना
Then by that ruler, endowed with beauty and wealth,
यो गत्वा प्रमदाराज्यं जित्वा ताः प्रमदा रणे
who, having gone to the realm of women, conquered those women in battle,
प्रददौ मयि ताः सर्वाः प्रणम्य च पुनः पुनः
he gave all of them to me, bowing again and again.
तानि मे प्रददौ पुत्रो जनन्या तूपवर्णितः
My son gave me those women, who had been described by their mother.
पुनरायाति शर्वर्यां मत्पादाभ्यङ्गकारणात्
He returns at night for the purpose of massaging my feet.
प्रबोधयन्प्रेष्यजनान्निद्रया संकुलेन्द्रियान्
Awakening the servants, whose senses are overcome by sleep,
अप्रमेयं मम सुखं वशगा हि प्रिया गृहे
My happiness is immeasurable, for my beloved is obedient at home.
वर्तते हि जनः सर्वो ममाज्ञापालकः क्षितौ
Indeed, all people on earth are my subjects, obeying my command.
इह जन्मकृतं वापि परजन्मकृतं तथा
Whether produced by this birth or by another birth,
मम पुण्यं वद ब्रह्मन् विचार्य स्वमनीषया
O Brahmin, tell me my merit, having considered with your own wisdom.
विद्वत्सु पूजा द्विजदानशक्तिर्मन्ये ऽहमेतत्सुकृतप्रसूतम्
Among the learned, I am honored; I have the power to give gifts to twice-borns—indeed, I think this arises from good deeds.
चिन्तयित्वा क्षणं ज्ञात्वा कारणं तमुचाव ह
Having reflected for a moment and understood the reason, he spoke thus:
दारिर्द्येण पराभूतो दुष्टया भार्यया तथा
Defeated by poverty and also by a wicked wife,
निवसन्दुःखसंतप्तो बहुवर्षाणि पार्थिव
afflicted by the suffering of dwelling, for many years, O king,
ततः सर्वाणि तीर्थानि परक्रम्य महीपते
then, having visited all the sacred places, O lord of the earth,
तत्र स्नातं त्वया विप्रसंगेन यमुनाजले
there, you bathed with the company of Brahmins in the waters of the Yamuna.
मन्दिरे च वराहस्य कथ्यमानां कथां नृप
And in the temple of Varaha, O king, you listened to the story being told.
चतुर्भिः पारणैर्यस्य निष्पत्तिस्तु विधीयते
By four fasts, its completion is prescribed.
